Canadian department store, Hudson Bay Company, has come under fire for a T-shirt that features Kate Moss’ infamous quote, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels".
The T-shirt, which bears a 0-calorie nutrition label alongside the quote, was pulled from stores after shoppers took to Twitter to complain, saying that it encourages eating disorders alongside the hashtags #NotBuyingIt and #YoureFired.
The words, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels", were made famous by British supermodel Kate Moss when she claimed it was a motto she lived by in a 2009 interview. Moss was consequently accused of encouraging teenage girls to become anorexic.
In response to the T-shirt, one shopper wrote, "Promoting #eatingdisorders is unbelievably irresponsible! #notbuyingit" while another posted, "As someone in #recovery from an #eatingdisorder I'm #NotBuyingIt."
However, the designer of the T-shirt, New York-based artist Christopher Sauvé , has responded by saying the shirt is meant to be a mockery of the fashion industry. "Like all of my designs, it’s a glorified warning, an ode to the farcicality of the fashion industry and the obsessives that surround it," said Sauvé in an official statement.
"My sincerest apologies to anyone that I have offended with my designs," continued Sauvé. "I believe wholeheartedly in my work, however, and I can’t apologise for that."
Sauve's "skinny" shirt design has been in stores around the world since 2009, but was just released in Canada this month.
The Bay, which stocked the t-shirt, said, "We truly value our relationship with our customers and take their concerns seriously and we recognise that many took offense to the item," in an official statement to Canadian newspaper The Star.
"In this particular instance, while we respect the designer’s art, due to the overwhelming response and the sensitivity of the matter, we made the decision to promptly remove the T-shirts from our stores and from thebay.com," added the brand.
