The New York Film Festival is the perfect place for celebrity outfit spotting. Stylist’s fashion director, Lucy Reber, takes us through the best looks so far.

There is something about the New York Film Festival (NYFF) that makes it an amazing home for celebrity event outfits. Could it be because it’s based on the ever-cool east coast, rather than the traditionally glamorous LA location of the Oscars and Grammys? Perhaps it’s because it’s a festival rather than a huge night of awards that gives those formal event outfits an edge.

I’ve been keeping an eye on my favourite looks since NYFF launched on 27 September, and I haven’t been disappointed. Some key looks include an amazing chocolate brown pleated dress on Adriana Paz and a pinstripe suit that was the perfect amount of slouchy on actor-director Mati Diop. What I loved about these looks was the nod to more laid-back dressing for a formal occasion. Occasionwear can be so stuffy, and with the festive season on the horizon, I’ve started to think about party dressing and how it can be done in a more modern way. The NYFF provides amazing inspiration for this: fewer flamboyant awards gowns and more clean-line dresses and unexpected statements.

Of course, along with the low-key looks, we have some wonderful celebrity outfits on display, too. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in Tom Brown couture, I am looking at you.

It’s all in the mix after all, read on for my absolute favourites.

Selena Gomez attends the 62nd New York Film Festival - %22Emilia Pérez%22 - Red Carpet at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on September 30, 2024 in New York City.

Selena Gomez in custom Vera Wang

Selena Gomez has made a statement in this sleek black Vera Wang dress. Simple, but the addition of a neat bow and sleeves transforms this look into something special. Her slicked-back hair and strong brows are the perfect modern foil to this classic look.

Ethan Herisse poses backstage before the "Nickel Boys" premiere during the opening night of the 62nd New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on September 27, 2024 in New York City

Ethan Herisse in Balmain

This gorgeous silhouetted look by Balmain ensured Ethan Herisse really stood out. The bright blue tones with an accent of red are striking, while the simple cut of the jacket and roll-neck make the whole thing feel restrained. I love this look.

Cate Blanchett attends the "Rumours" premier

Cate Blanchett in Fiorucci

This unique synthetic hair shirt was made in collaboration with artist Taiba Akhuetie and creative director Francesca Murri for Murri’s debut show for Milanese brand Fiorucci this September. Perfectly styled with a chic bob hairstyle and insouciant leather trousers too.

Adriana Paz attends the "Emilia Pérez" premiere

Adriana Paz in Neithan Herbert

This gorgeous chocolate brown dress is the perfect mix of elegant and cool. From Neithan Herbert, which is based between Milan and Mexico, it has a timeless style that still feels contemporary. Chocolate brown is also a huge trend for autumn/winter 2024.

Zoe Saldana attends the 62nd New York Film Festival

Zoë Saldaña in Ferragamo

Red is the colour trend that endures all seasons and is still going strong beyond autumn/winter 2024, as this striking sequin dress from Ferragamo’s resort collection proves. I love Saldaña’s slicked-back pony and ear cuff lending an edge to this elegant look.

Mati Diop poses backstage at the "Dahomey"

Mati Diop in tailoring

This suit is the perfect balance of oversized yet feminine. Actor-director Mati Diop has styled it to perfection with black accents and simple metallic jewellery. Wide-leg trousers have been my most worn piece for autumn/winter 2024, and this look shows that they work everywhere—from the office to a film launch.

Felicity Jones attends the red carpet for The Brutalist

Felicity Jones in Givenchy

This deceptively simple Givenchy gown is a vision of simple elegance from the front but has the most beautiful button detail down the back. Felicity Jones is styled by London-based stylist Nicky Yates and always looks elegant yet cool.

Emma Laird attends the red carpet for The Brutalist

Emma Laird in Louis Vuitton

I love how Emma Laird has styled this bejewelled caped mini dress by Louis Vuitton with heavy black riding boots. Her loose disco curls and lack of jewellery come together to make this such a cool look.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in Thom Browne couture

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor looks regal in this outsized coat from Thom Browne’s 2023 couture collection. I love that she has added height with moulded platform boots and kept jewellery simple with my favourite – a gold hoop.

Mischa Barton in a green trench

Mischa Barton has embraced the low-key NYFF dress code in a fabulous green trench, and it really works. Keeping her outfit underneath a simple black column and her hair in loose waves, there is a nod to this season’s love for all things boho, but in a subtle way that’s cool rather than themed.
