A classic pair of trainers are the one fashion staple that’s universal no matter your style. To laud the adaptability of the sneaker we asked five women with different fashion IDs to style the same pair…
What did we do before trainers? It’s like imagining a time when we still had to rely on paper maps and avocados weren’t being used as fuel to blame an entire generation.
They’re a wardrobe staple for most of us. And that means they open up a whole world of interpretation and creativity when it comes to styling them.
To prove our theory we asked five members of the Stylist team to style the same pair. Here’s what happened…
1. Aletha
“First and foremost I’d describe my style as comfy. The only time you won’t catch me in trainers is when I’m off to an event where I want to dress up a little more so bring out my heels - my second favourite footwear. Besides that I’m in trainers every single day.
With the weather getting warmer I’m really starting to get into neutral colour palettes. I thought a neutral look would go really well with the Puma Calis and make the black accent soles pop.”
2. Amy
“Despite brief flirtations with neon (definitely not for me) and emo (still a strong look TBF) my style these days generally involves denim and some sort of 90s-style dress.
I like pairing ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ together so a slip dress and an oversized, untailored jacket is the dream combination.
A pair of classic white trainers is a refreshing change to my usual battered pair of boots and gives the outfit more of a summertime feel.”
3. Meena
“My style is quite minimal – I usually go for neutral colours and classic shapes that I can dress up or dress down easily just by switching up my accessories.
Jumpsuits are such an easy way to look put together with minimal effort and adding trainers makes the look more relaxed. If I can do a cartwheel and go to a meeting in it, the outfit’s a winner.”
4. Grace
“The street style and individually of people in London is something quite mesmerising. I get a lot of inspiration from seeing how someone quirkily layers an outfit or simply by how the way you carry yourself can really bring a look together.
I’d describe my own style as simple, timeless and hassle-free. The contrast between a slinky dress paired with some slick trainers is my dream outfit this summer. Take me to the pub, a festival, a friend’s house – I’m ready.”
5. Sophie
“I styled this pair of trainers with a classic slip skirt and accessorised the look with a bow as it makes a slightly fancy outfit work for everyday.
Trainers are the ultimate companion if you’re rushing around having the day from hell. Can you be quick on your feet? Yes. Can you maintain an element of style even if you’ve lost all composure? Also yes.”
Whatever your take on the classic trainer, make them your own with Puma Cali.
