Stripes are the street-style print to pick – here’s how to wear them for a wardrobe lift

2 min read

From nautical to preppy, this is how to style stripes this season, including the chicest street-style looks that will elevate your wardrobe.

Stripes never seem to go out of style. While fashion trends come and go, stripes have earned their place as a timeless classic, and this season, they’re making a big comeback – thanks in part to the trending fisherman aesthetic

At the spring/summer 2025 shows, the print was everywhere. Proenza Schouler showcased chic striped shirts, coats and dresses; Tommy Hilfiger embraced the collegiate vibe with striped jumpers, skirts and chic rugby shirts; and Ralph Lauren gave us nautical stripes with navy and white vest tops, shirts and knitted dresses.

But not all stripes are created equal: some designers are going for bold, bright hues for a dopamine-inducing hit of colour. Chanel, for example, played with pastel pinks and greens, which feel so fresh for spring, especially when paired with of-the-moment butter-yellow shades.

The big question, though, is how do we wear stripes in a way that feels cool? Well, don’t worry – we’ve rounded up four looks straight from the street-style set to give you all the inspiration you need.

Playful pinstripes

When thinking of lined looks, pinstripes are often the first thing that spring to mind. Traditionally used on formal suits in navy, grey and black shades, they’re a standout in many officewear wardrobes.

By introducing brighter colours, the classic look can become a bit more playful. To truly lean into the look, we recommend styling contrasting stripes together, such as wearing the classic fine lines with a chunky stripe or finding items that mix and match the size of stripes themselves, just like this street style look.

Colourful candy stripes

Candy stripes are one of the most statement-making styles to go for, offering bright and bold colours. Traditionally, in pink and white, they’re reminiscent of retro candy bags or candy canes.

The key to styling candy stripes is to have fun with it. Experiment with clashing sorbet shades or keep it simple with a sweet striped shirt dress (as pictured). You can also amp up the look with vibrant accessories for an even bolder look.

Business-ready banker stripes

Stripes are so frequently linked with office outfits that ‘banker stripes’ have become a style of their own. Typically wider than a pinstripe but finer than a pencil stripe, these stripes are often white on a baby blue fabric, making them a classic choice for business shirts.

Now, there are plenty more options to pick from on the high street that will all work incredibly well in an office environment. To keep it formal, turn to tailoring with suit trousers, blazers, shirts and pencil skirts, but don’t be afraid to mix and match stripe styles and shades to add an element of interest.

Basic Breton stripes

Once favoured by sailors and now a staple in French fashion and royal wardrobes, Breton stripes have stood the test of time. The classic top, featuring 21 white stripes and 20–21 blue stripes, is simple, chic and perfect for casual looks. You don’t need to worry about counting stripes, though; just pair it with dark denim jeans and ballet flats for an effortless outfit.
