Cool chrome is taking over the fashion world – here’s how to wear it

Chrome boots, bags, trousers and even coats are key right now – silver beats gold this season, and this is how to wear it for winter.

There’s no denying that metallics are synonymous with party season. We all know if you don’t know which colour shoe or bag to go for, gold or silver is the answer. But this year, silver is reigning supreme in the style stakes and glitzy gold has taken a step back so silver can have its time to shine. Spotted all over the AW23 runways, Michael Kors showed silver midi skirts with matching shoes, Altuzarra went for tin foil style dresses and Dolce & Gabbana confirmed the return of silver jewels.

While cool chrome outfits were in abundance on the catwalks – some wearable, some not so much – we wanted to show you the looks we non-model folk can actually wear in real life. Because silver is always going to be a colour that gets all eyes on you, so you want to make sure you’re wearing it in a chic way. Here are five ways to style silver for winter - from silver trousers to silver knee-high boots.

Add fun trousers to shirting

Spotted all over the high street, Zara, Mango and H&M have created a pair of silver trousers or jeans this season. While they were first spotted in 2022, the trousers have now been more widely accepted as an alternative to classic jeans. If you’re unsure how to style them, though, let the trousers do all the talking by pairing them with a fuss-free white shirt and stop them bunching at the bottom by adding heels.

So you’ve put on your favourite knitted dress and a matching cosy winter coat but now you need to make it an outfit worth stepping out in – enter: silver knee-high boots. Hush, Marks & Spencer and Jigsaw have all created pairs for winter, and they’re an easy way to elevate even the most simple of outfits this season. Unsure about knee-highs? Try a Western ankle boot with jeans instead.

Go for double trouble with a co-ord

If you’re feeling daring, then a cool chrome co-ord is one to wear for party season, and beyond. Be it a jacket and mini skirt or a silver coat (yes, really) with your new silver trousers, anything goes as long as you go for two matching items. To make it more chic rather than futuristic, keep the rest of the outfit simple in neutral colours such as black, white or grey.

Wear a mini dress with a maxi coat

A silver mini dress is an easy win, and you may already own one – it’s a party season hero item, after all. Wear it with a to-the-floor maxi coat (charcoal grey works so well with silver) and with heels for a night out. For daytime, simply add a roll neck knit underneath, throw on some 60-denier winter-ready tights and style with chunky knee-high boots.

Switch from gold to silver jewels

If you’re unsure about embracing the statement silver trend, the simplest way to dip your toe into the trend is by wearing silver jewellery. For years, gold jewellery has been more popular among fashion people, but recently silver has taken back the title and everyone is now adding piles of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings all in the shade of the season. You could even go one step further and wear your jewels with a matching silver bag or shoes, too.
