Thanks to Claudia Winkleman, Taylor Swift and Saoirse Ronan, this heritage-inspired print has had an upgrade. Here are four stylish ways to wear it this season.
Whether it’s a cheerful checked kilt or a 90s-inspired grungy flannel shirt, plaid is one of those prints that always manages to weave its way into fashion. Just look at Claudia Winkleman’s Highland-inspired wardrobe on The Traitors, or how Taylor Swift and Saoirse Ronan are turning to tartan these days. Heritage prints may be classic but lately they’ve never felt cooler.
At the autumn/winter 2024 collections, designers showed new ways to incorporate plaid into our wardrobes. Take the bold skirt designs at 16Arlington (below) or Dries Van Noten’s playful take on checked trousers, paired with striking shades of electric blue and pink.
And you can always rely on Burberry’s iconic heritage patterns – so countryside chic. Daniel Lee served up duffle coats and trenches, cut in sharp straight-line plaids in musty browns and punchy yellows.

But how to style this classic? Much like animal print, plaid is loud and proud, so give it the spotlight it deserves. Tartan trousers, coats and skirts are an easy way to take the headache out of styling, just pair with a chunky knit and camel coat for an elevated look.
Or, take a cue from Saoirse Ronan (below), who mixed and matched her heritage prints for a fun clash. She opted for minimal accessories – just classic black mules and slicked back hair.

Stick on a skirt
Dressing like you’re Highlands-bound is the move this season à la Claudia Winkleman on The Traitors. And what better way to do that than by wearing a classic kilt or plaid skirt?
Style with ribbed socks and a bonnet for a cosy look, just like Raquel has (below) with her Damson Madder skirt.
I’ve also had my eye on this gorgeous green pick from the British label too. For a more elevated take, I’ll pair it with a tutu and silk skirt underneath to add a touch of texture. With the trend of layering skirts and dresses on the rise, it’s the perfect way to check off two trends at once (pun intended), all while staying chic and warm.
Damson Madder Kat kilt
Made from 100% organic cotton, this Damson Madder skirt has a traditional kilt silhouette. The green check and side-fastening pay homage to classic style, while modern details like tie accents and back pockets give it a fresh look.
Choose a statement coat
If you’re tired of your usual trench, why not switch things up with a printed plaid coat? Heritage-style outerwear is all about making a statement and with its bold, dramatic print, it will instantly become the focal point of your outfit. This means you needn’t worry too much about what you’re wearing underneath.
For inspiration, see Tessa below in her striking tartan print coat, featuring fabulous fluffy cuffs and a dramatic silhouette. Obsessed.
I also love red and white checked styles like this one from Nobody’s Child – it’s practical, functional yet full of flair.

A coat you’ll return to year after year. The red check and double-breasted style is just so chic and will partner well with all your wardrobe staples.

Contrast bold colours
If you lean towards a more neutral colour palette, contrasting shades and prints together might feel tricky. But trust me, playing with bold hues and patterns is a fun way to refresh your wardrobe and brighten your mood.
Take a cue from Cat Peterson, who styles hot pink accessories with an earthy green plaid coat to give a fresh update to the classic country print. Burgundy plaid looks great with shades of charcoal grey and if you’re after something a bit warmer, chocolate brown and custard yellow makes a stylish combo.
Try some tartan trousers
For minimalists, you’ll love Rachael’s simple T-shirt with printed trousers combo below. It’s an easy way to incorporate plaid without making your outfit too OTT. To recreate, grab your favourite T-shirt and pair with a sleek, neutral-toned coat. By opting for a clean-cut crew-neck on top and statement plaid trousers on the bottom, you can create a balanced look that keeps the focus on your face without any distractions.
