Dior’s AW24 collection proved neutral fashion is anything but boring – here’s how to wear the subtle shades

It seems we’re swapping the oat milk latte look for more of an Americano.

For many of us, our wardrobes have been a swathe of beige, brown and cream colours for quite some time, thanks, in part, to social media’s trending ‘neutral aesthetic’. But despite standout shades seeping through – Barbie pink, Bottega green and, most recently, fashion week favourite yellow – the neutral mindset isn’t shifting anytime soon.

Looking at the upcoming autumn/winter collections that just showcased in London, New York, Paris and Milan, 34% of the Hermès runway was brown, 21% of Dior and Chloé was beige and khaki colours were up 56% across the board, according to fashion search engine Tagwalk. And that’s only a small handful of the hundreds of shows the recent fashion week circuit has seen.

The oat milk latte look is nothing new, so how do we keep it interesting and evolve our current wardrobes while tapping into this trend? We’ve broken down our favourite neutral Paris Fashion Week looks to search for answers from Dior, Hermès, Saint Laurent and Chloé.

Starting with simple steps that we can all adopt into our wardrobes, Dior taught us how to break up browns, beiges and creams with staple black shades, Hermès showed us the importance of monochrome styling and Chloé proved how much of an impact picking different fabrics and textures has on our outfits – we’ve already shared styling tips on how to step into the sheer look to give you a head start.

Keep scrolling for everything you need to know about taking the subtle shades into the next season.

Break it up with black

When wearing neutrals, it can be easy to keep things a bit brighter, weaving in whites and creams to break up browns. Although, as seen across the Dior autumn/winter 2024 catwalk, black is a popular basic for good reason. Boots, jumpers, tops and accessories in the darker shade not only accentuate neutral shades but also warm them up for the colder months. Or, in the case of Dior, who used graffiti-like graphics to personalise the runway pieces, black can be used to create quite the contrast, too. While we may not encourage everyone to start spray painting their own outfits, jewellery, scarves and accessories can all achieve a similar end result.

Make it monochrome

Whether it be red, yellow, blue or brown, monochrome styling had a real moment across the board this fashion week season, with brands from Stine Goya to Baum und Pferdgarten making full looks out of one single shade. Turning towards the neutral fashion family of colours, Hermès opted for chocolate browns, khakis, creams, blacks and reds to make up the bulk of its autumn/winter collection with plenty of high-shine leather looks. When looking to elevate your nice and neutral looks, next season is shifting from oat milk latte to an Americano.

Step into sheer styling

Chloé’s autumn/winter 2024 collection has taken the fashion world by storm. Not only was it designer Chemena Kamali’s brand debut, but the house made a statement by stepping back into its boho roots. Feminine, floaty fabrics sat alongside faux fur, structured leather and knitted fabrics creating interest through texture (particularly sheer, see-through styles) as well as tone. To step into the style, take a look at our sheer styling tips, including layering dresses over jeans, accentuating your underwear and leaning into leggings so as to not appear nearly naked.

Keep up with khaki

Although it may not be the first neutral shade that springs to mind, fashion search engine Tagwalk highlighted khaki as an increasing trend, with the deep green shade up 56% across the board of the most recent fashion week collections. Spearheaded by Saint Laurent, who kept khaki as a core feature in its autumn/winter colour palette, the colour contrasts skin tone-like shades by adding an element of interest to every look. Think khaki shirts with cream trousers, khaki skirts with brown jumpers or make a monochrome khaki look inspired by Hermès styling tips.
