From the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks to style icons like Alexa Chung and Iris Law, the fashion set has spoken: knitted hoods are big again this season.
Every season, the catwalks remind us that fashion loves its staples. From heeled boots to wrap skirts and wool coats, there are certain pieces we come to expect. But every so often, a new trend sneaks in that feels unexpected, and this season, the fashion hood is one of those rare gems.
Covering your head, ears and neck, this accessory first gained popularity when Miu Miu unveiled knitted headgear in its snow-dusted autumn/winter 2021 collection, when it was paired with sequins and puffers. This year, it’s made a strong return, with Depop reporting a 398% increase in searches for bonnets since July.

On the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks, Simone Rocha embraced cottagecore (above), presenting dreamy cherry-red embellished hoods that felt reminiscent of those in The Handmaid’s Tale. Stella McCartney kept things understated with butter-yellow hoods tucked into matching jumpers, while Diesel opted for shaggy snoods paired with matching textured coats.
There are so many ways to style them, whether you lean into tonal hues or pair your bonnet with sparkly vintage pieces.
If you’re wondering how to wear one in a grown-up way, keep scrolling for our expert-styling tips and favourite knitted hood looks of the season.
How to style knitted hoods
Go for a head-to-toe tonal look
Tonal dressing – ie wearing pieces in shades of the same colour – is a great way to ease into the knitted accessories trend. Rather than bolder, OTT hues, opt for cosy grey or camel tones to keep your outfit simple and chic. Another understated option is an all-taupe look, and Min (pictured above) pairs her bonnet with a matching woollen coat and luxe leather bag.
Tuck your bonnet into your jumper
For a sleek look, tuck a knitted bonnet inside a roll-neck jumper. Not only does it look more polished, but it also adds an extra layer of warmth, thanks to the high neckline. Chunkier knits, like Aran styles or this slouchy H&M option below, work beautifully here, adding volume and texture.
To soften the look, follow Nikki’s example (pictured above) and leave a few loose strands of hair peeking out from the sides of the bonnet and pair it with sunglasses and a white roll-neck.
Match with metallics
If you’ve been embracing metallic pieces over the festive season, don’t put them away just yet. Pair them with a soft knitted bonnet or hood to create a balanced look. They bring all the sparkle, while cosy knitwear adds texture and warmth.
Take a cue from Cat (pictured above), who styles her shiny River Island trousers with a pastel pink Damson Madder knitted hood. This combination is unexpected yet stylish. We also love bright red, which pairs well with glittering gold and bronze hues, while charcoal and slate grey works better with chrome.
