The knit you can casually toss on is doubling up as a scarf for this season’s latest winter accessory trend.

As the weather gets cooler, we’re looking for pieces that’ll keep us warm and toasty. But do we really need to splurge on yet another scarf to stay cosy and stylish? This winter, we’re making the most of our cool-weather clothing with what we’re calling the ‘scrumper’, ie the jumper-as-a-scarf trend.

Practical, effortless and cool, wearing your jumper as a scarf keeps you cosy and allows you to get more use out of your existing pieces – a win-win situation. Spotted on the shoulders of Jennifer Lawrence and Sofia Richie Grainge, the latest accessory trend has also made appearances on the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks

At Skall Studio, the chunky knit jumper was looped over the shoulders of models and paired with neutral ensembles. Michael Kors followed suit with luxe grey scrumpers (below). Meanwhile, Etro took a bolder, brighter approach to layering, reimagining the knit in punchy jumper-and-scarf combos.

The key takeaway? Anything goes. Whether twisted, draped or tied in elaborate knots, the styling options are endless. Just keep accessories minimal – opt for some simple gold hoops to really let your scrumper stand out. Don’t hesitate to combine your jumper with all your day and night outfits.

Below, see our favourite ways to wear the jumper-as-a-scarf style.

How to style your jumper as a scarf

Combine with a killer coat

Whether draped over a bomber jacket, blazer or even a long wool coat, a scrumper is a great alternative to buying new winter accessories. Tie your cable-knit jumper loosely around a leather jacket or take note from Alexa Chung (below) and pair your everyday knit with a lighter-toned coat. It adds an extra layer of depth and texture to an ensemble.

Get experimental with layering

Layering and knotting your jumper diagonally across your body might sound strange, but trust me – it’s an easy way to add texture and keeps you looking polished. Just turn to Marina Ingvarsson (below) for styling inspiration, who’s made the everyday knit look so elevated.

You can even tie two jumpers together or use simple knotting techniques to create shoulder bows and twisted styles. We recommend using sturdier weaves, eg classic wool jumpers or Aran knits to avoid stretching out your finer pieces.

Combining contrasting colours

Choosing the right colour is crucial when it comes to styling your jumper as a scarf. Select items that complement the colour palette of all the existing pieces in your wardrobe.

Take inspiration from the Etro autumn/winter 2024 catwalk, where jumpers in crisp green apple shades were draped ever so loosely around the neck. We love the pop of colour – it just looks so cool.
