Jigsaw’s autumn collection is a masterclass in how to style the colour palette of the season

The colour palette of the season is dark red and brown, with hints of purple and pops of bright tomato red. On the catwalks, a lot of the looks were evening-specific but the key to styling the palette for daily wear is to add a camel accessory or a pastel blue or green knit or print. Jigsaw’s autumn collection launches this week and it’s the perfect example of how to style these seasonal shades.

Autumnal shades of deep chocolate brown, aubergine and tomato red were seen across the catwalks in all of the major fashion capitals, while burgundy played a major part in Khaite’s autumn/winter 2024 collection in New York, where collarless leather trenches and ankle-grazing leather skirts were styled with sheer sculptural tops and heels.

At Bottega Veneta there were elegant evening looks featuring espresso shirting with icy blue accents, and at Chloe we saw aubergine outerwear, accessories and knits styled alongside dark beige blouses and cape coats with plenty of statement gold jewellery.

There were flashes of lemon, olive and dusty blue among the deep brown and burgundy tailoring at Fendi, knitted brown separates with teal accents at Ahluwahlia, effortlessly elegant sleeveless chocolate brown drop-waist dresses at 16 Arlington and high-shine burgundy outerwear worn with red pumps at Isabel Marant.

According to Libby Page, market director at Net-a-Porter: “Burgundy made its presence felt both on and off the runway across New York, London, Milan, and Paris, establishing itself as a ubiquitous trend for the season. Head-to-toe looks as seen at Erdem, Ferragamo, Khaite and Emilia Wickstead gave maximum impact and delivered the message that burgundy is the new neutral.” The Net-a-Porter team also confirmed that the colour’s popularity is already translating into sales, with an 18% increase for spring/summer 2024 versus spring/summer 2023.

However, not all of this screams ‘suitable for work’ or ‘great for a local dinner with friends’, but Jigsaw’s elegant, effortless and easy-to-wear interpretation of the brown, burgundy and red palette is exciting for everyday wear.

There are ankle-grazing burgundy crepe dresses that are perfect for work when worn with boots and great for a smart dinner afterwards. There are raspberry overcoats and aubergine wool wrap coats that will update your existing autumn wardrobe in an instant and a lightweight espresso brown suit that would look perfect for the office (and just as good at the weekend with loafers and a knit).

If shoes are what you’re after, look to the brand’s point-toe leather flats in caramel. Meanwhile, cross-body structured small-but-not-mini bags work great with every shade of brown or red. Camel knitwear is styled with ecru denim and black flat boots. Flashes of peppermint, icy blue and bright tomato red add detail and playfulness: think pastel knits with brown tailoring, aubergine dresses with a dusty blue coat or scarf and olive green knits worn with deep red separates.
