Party season is well and truly under way and we’re already looking at how we can elevate our existing wardrobes to get into the festive swing of things.

And while we can always rely on items like statement bags, heels and hats to switch up that favourite Christmas dress, according to Stylist’s fashion and beauty director Kitty McGee, luxe jewellery (like platinum, white gold and diamonds) is what we should be investing in to accessorise our party garms, for this season and beyond.

“I think people worry that diamonds can look dated but the diamonds available today are incredibly contemporary,” says McGee. “The rise of semi-fine jewellery since the noughties has given diamonds a much broader appeal. We saw this in the stacking ring and huggie hoop earring trends, spurred on by the trend for multiple piercings around that time, too.

“In general, diamonds are much more modern than they once were and the affordability of lab-grown diamonds, for example, has definitely played into that,” McGee adds when asked about buying these pieces for ourselves.

“As with any investment, I’d ask yourself lots of questions. Do you want something statement or something understated? Do you want something transformative, like a cocktail ring or something that will elevate your everyday looks, like a beautiful pair of earrings or a pendant necklace. But also go with your gut – is there something, a particular motif, for example, that you’re drawn to? If so, go with it. I often grow to love jewellery more and more with time.”
