This weekend, Netflix’s most lavish investment yet went on air. The streaming service waged £120 million on Queen Elizabeth II biopic, The Crown.

Luckily, it’s paid off, as the costume drama debuted to rave reviews from users this weekend – most of whom have already binge-watched the entire series and rewound for a second glimpse at the show-stopping costumes.

The dress getting most attention is the replica of the Queen’s 1947 wedding gown. And so we bet you’re wondering: how much of the huge budget was blown on the incredible feat of a design?

The elaborately embroidered ivory silk gown features on screen for just nine minutes, and cost £30,000.

It took seven weeks to make the exact replica of the dress worn by actress Claire Foy for the scene in which her character weds Prince Philip (played by Matt Smith) at Westminster Abbey.

The original was crafted by royal atelier Norman Hartnell over the course of six months. It was encrusted with 10,000 seed pearls and featured a 13-foot train. The exquisite look was completed with a diamond tiara and a double strand of pearls.

The dress wasn’t just a huge feat in terms of design, it was also one to wear. Foy told The Telegraph"It took five days to shoot that scene, and the dress, an exact replica, weighed a ton.

"All the fiddling to get it right, and needing the loo and you've got a crown on your head. For this young woman to be wearing all that and then have the composure to walk through the Abbey full of dignitaries and heads of state, and then having to be anointed… It must have taken huge gumption."
