10 best pieces to take on holiday this summer, as chosen by a fashion editor
Updated 6 years ago
Ready to take all the stress out of your holiday packing? These are the ten pieces to shop now.
I may not have a holiday booked (just yet) but that hasn’t stopped me planning my holiday wardrobe. With the UK heatwave in full swing it actually means summery buys can be fully justified either way — that’s what I’m telling my debit card, anyway. Of course looking to the sales at the likes of Net-A-Porter and Matches Fashion are always handy, but the “new in” sections are where I’m drawn to for the specific outfits I have in mind.
Of course, it’s all too easy to panic-pack multiple dresses, tops, shoes etc. into your case and hope for the best.
However, I personally prefer to plan outfits for daytime and evening. Think of the pieces you’ll wear on repeat, the ones that’ll look just as good by the pool as they will for after dark at the cocktail bar. Most importantly, you want to invest in pieces this time of year that you know you’ll wear once you get home, too.
This is why I’ve curated an edit of the ten pieces I could quite easily pack into my hand luggage knowing that if my checked in luggage did end up in the Maldives, when I’m in Barcelona, then I could still make multiple outfits work.
From the Loewe bag that everyone is obsessed with (including me, of course) to the belted swimsuits I’ll be wearing every year going forward — these are the fashion buys to snap up now.
Loewe straw bag
The straw bag will do one of two things; it’ll be your friend on the beach and your even better friend once you get to duty-free. You’ll be able to stockpile it with perfume, make-up and of course bulk buy chocolate. This Loewe version is so popular it has already been spotted on so many influencers.
Loewe, £325
Solid & Striped Nina belted scoop-neck swimsuit
I’m such a fan of the belted swimsuit I’ve already rounded up my favourite ones, here. This Solid & Striped beauty is 1) the style is super flattering 2) has a contrasting belt that’ll draw attention to the waist and 3) it’ll compliment my holiday glow.
Solid & Striped, £145
Teva original sandals
Ask me last year and I would have told you I wouldn’t wear dad sandals. Fast-forward to this year and I haven’t taken them off my feet. Not only do they make you feel like you’re walking on a cloud, they also go with everything I own from jeans and a tee to linen dresses.
Teva, £40
Faithfull The Brand Yasmin shirred checked crepe midi dress
I’ve seen this lime checked dress of loads of influencers already and I’m not surprised. It’s in this season’s key colour, has the perfect flattering shape and length and the wide straps are practically made for hiding a bikini top or bra underneath. Hello. Dream. Dress.
Faithfull The Brand, £166
Zimmermann juno D-frame acetate sunglasses
When it comes to sunglasses it’s all about going for styles that suit your face shape, rather than being trend-lead. For me, the super skinny sunglasses trend from last year are a no-go so I always opt for over-sized or cat-eye instead. Aussie brand Zimmermann has created this dreamy retro tinted pair and I know I’ll wear them one summer to the next.
Zimmermann, £200
& Other Stories polka dot pencil midi skirt
This polka dot skirt has a striking resemblance to a designer style I’ve had my eye on for a while now. Luckily, & Other Stories have created an iteration for a cut of the price. I’ll be wearing it with a racer vest and raffia sandals for the duration of summer.
& Other Stories polka dot pencil midi skirt, £65
Zara pearl, bead and shell hair clips
I was never really a fan of hair clips as a child, so now it seems I’m making up for lost time. My hair accesories collection is getting out of hand, however, after spotting this Zara shell set I could be persuaded.
Zara, £12.99
Arket linen cotton tailored shorts
The city short isn’t just for city breaks. The longer length more tailored style is the pair I’ll be packing in my beach bag to add over swimwear. It’s the easy way to switch from beach to brunch and back again.
Arket, £55
H&M straw sun hat
Not only does a sun hat look chic, it’s also an easy way to carry jewellery in on the way there. Top tip: if you fill it with said jewellery it’ll also help it to keep its shape when it’s packed in a case.
H&M, £13.99
Reformation jewel floral print bustier top
Puff sleeved tops and dresses are basically all I want to wear this season. They’re so easy to incorporate into your everyday and evening wardrobe — think jeans and sliders or slip skirts and mules.
Reformation, £140
