While we're fascinated by the life of former actress, Grace Kelly, her beauty, elegance and sense of style really is a thing to admire. And since Grace of Monaco hit the big screen, we've been obsessing over the clothes that Nicole Kidman wears in the movie.

Luckily, we got the chance to chat with the costume designer for the film, Gigi Lepage, who told us about the process of creating such intricate garments as well as what it was like to dress Nicole Kidman, and even how much input she had into the designs she was going to wear.

Grace Kelly/ the Princess of Monaco was renowned for having a beautiful wardrobe. Did you feel pressure to ensure you got her look just right?

Well, I always feel pressure when I’m working, but I trust in me and in my team. Since it wasn't an historical film, I felt free in terms of the plot to create costumes.

What was the process of designing the costumes for the film? How long before the filming begins do you have to start preparing the looks?

It took us three months of intensive research of various types of documents and about three and a half months to design, create and prepare the film..

Are there any stand-out fashion moments in this film?

I would say the red dress and the Cristal ball gown.

What’s your favourite outfit from the film?

I really enjoyed working on this project so it's difficult to choose one outfit from so many looks , but if I had to pick, I would say the red dress! Or the grey Dior women suit, and I adore the Madge character black dress.

Where did you draw the inspiration from with the designing of the clothes?

I drew inspiration from Grace Kelly, the period and the various sources of documentation like photographs, magazine clippings or film footage. There's also my interpretation of the script.

What iconic moments did you take from Grace’s wardrobe?

Throughout my research for the film, Grace of Monaco, I noticed in many photographs that she wears a lovely white gown for official ceremonies. I decided to reproduce a similar version for these important scenes in the movie.

From what I've read this gown was designed by the House of Lanvin, in 1956. She was known to wear it with a sash and star representing Monaco as well as the badge of the Monégasque Order of St. Charles that we also reproduced.

Princess Grace wore this incredible ball gown to various events such as the Monaco Opera House following a civil ceremony and an official visit with Charles de Gaulle at the Elysées Palace in Paris in 1959. It is made meticulously hand-embroidered of white, silk organdy, had a V-shaped neckline, an Empire waistline with a full bustle in the back. It was adorned with 800,000 sequins 1,500 rhinestones and pearls.

How closely did you work with Nicole Kidman? Did she have any input into the designs?

It was a real pleasure to work with Nicole Kidman. She read and saw all the documents that we had so it was easy to discuss about her character's outfits when we met. Afterwards, we did long fittings with a lot of accessories and shoes.
