Gwendoline Christie, star of the moment’s hottest on-screen hits including Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Hunger Games, has been revealed as Vivienne Westwood’s latest fashion muse.
Over its five seasons, Game of Thrones has captured the imagination of the fashion world. It was only a matter of time before another of its stars was plucked from the screen and placed onto the pages of glossy magazines. Earlier in the year, Maisie Williams appeared on the cover of Dazed and Emilia Clarke has become one of the show’s most popular stars. Even next seasons’ Valentino Couture has taken inspiration from the hit programme.
Christie appears in a series of gothic photographs taken by Juergen Teller for Westwood’s new ‘Unisex’ Collection.
Starting her career as a model and appearing on Westwood’s Paris runway in February, it’s a perfect match. The 6’3’’ actor, who plays Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, has broken down gender barriers through her role as a formidable female knight. There’s not a whiff of the ‘girlie’ in Brienne’s character, she’s a bona fide fighter.
That makes Christie, with her shock of peroxide hair and androgynous stature, perfect for Westwood’s Autumn/Winter 2016/2016 Unisex campaign.
Teller’s photographs, known for their natural raw beauty, show Christie as a grunge icon, clad in Westwood plaid, with thick black eyeliner and blood red lips.
In an official press release, Westwood said:
“Trousers for women, yes! Dresses for men, the same dresses that women wear? Do that!”
“We love the change in proportion: the big shoulders give a small head – it’s so sexual because it’s new, it makes you look at the person from outside, it’s all so sexual because we’re looking at people with new eyes,” said the designer.
It’s very topical at a time when gender constructs are being openly challenged by an increased awareness of the struggles faced by Transgender men and women. Particularly by Caitlyn Jenner.
Speaking about Christie, Westood said:
“In this collection the same suit can be worn by a man and a woman – then I realised Gwendoline would be perfect and would fit the clothes so I asked her to do it. She is such an attractive woman.”
Star of the campaign, Christie said:
“It is so relevant for Vivienne Westwood to re-assert their activist mind-set and create a collection that takes us beyond our current gender stereotypes with beauty and intelligence.”
