Are you ready to get ruffled?

Because that’s the trend set to ruche up our wardrobes in the coming months, if London Fashion Week is anything to go by.

This design flourish was big last season and it shows no sign of slowing down for SS18, with a steady roll call of designers showcasing it to dramatic effect.

This being London Fashion Week, there’s no such thing as a subtle ruffle: we’re talking ruffles of a cascading and theatrical variety.

At David Koma (above), high-octane ruffles took on an architectural edge, with tailoring so finely sculptured, it wouldn’t look of place in an art gallery.

Meanwhile, model Jourdan Dunn combined two hot themes of the moment – ruffles and sheer – for her foray down the Topshop catwalk (above).

It was a good match for the show’s aesthetic, which blended boudoir influences with showgirl exhibitionism: all layered onto a blueprint of the modern London woman.

Meanwhile, ruffles offered the perfect window into Simone Rocha's vision of fragility captured throughout her SS18 womenswear collection (above).

At once romantic and fleeting, there was no holding back: ruffled gowns poured forth a positive torrent of bridal-esque layers.

Over at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi (above), ruffles lent an unexpected edge to asymmetrical gowns in a mostly muted palette of pastel hues.

They created a little extra grit amid the array of delicate, Victoriana textures and barely-there colour. 

“I love the idea of a woman being able to stand up and deliver a lecture in front of a room full of men while wearing a beautiful floaty dress if she wants to. Why not?” says the label’s co-founder Thea Bregazzi.

Moving onto Shrimps 2218 (above), and London-based designer Hannah Weiland brought an artistic, whimsical vision to the runway.

Dainty ruffles encapsulated a slightly vintage, Downton-esque aura.

And last but not least, the Hong Kong-born designer Ryan Lo used ruffles in his accessories collection (above), typifying his love of romantic fantasy.

Long-sleeved gloves and even socks were given the ruffles treatment, in a look that is rather more sophisticated than when we wore them at school (the socks, not the gloves).
