During a hectic London fashion week, when there are shows on the hour every hour, the biggest indulgence is somewhere to sleep in peace. Every second of shut eye is invaluable to prepare for the next day of back to back to back shows.
So crashing into the comfort of the South Place hotel was the ultimate luxury at the end of the day.
Close to Liverpool Street station, the slick City hotel was a short stroll to the Topshop show venue at Spitalfields market, allowing this weary fashion director a lie-in of sorts. And if I wasn't dashing to the next show I would have taken advantage of the hotel's bike hire program to take a turn around Brick Lane and its environs. When there isn't the fall-out from a catwalk show blocking the road, E1 is a delightful spot to spend the weekend meandering along Columbia Road flower market, brunching and vintage shopping.
I bumped into Instagram influencer Eimear Varian Barney by the lifts and the hotel is perfect for photo opportunities with slick, modern urban styling - marble everywhere and flashes of fun art. I loved the wire shoe sculptures in the lobby as an apt reminder of why I was there.
Before hitting the hay one night, I tucked into three courses in the Chop House restaurant, where even dining alone feels like a treat. Slouched on a comfy banquette with a view of the city streets I had perfect grilled plaice, lettuce heart and walnut salad and raspberries with clotted cream (and an Old Fashioned cocktail to numb the pain of my high heel-injured feet.) If you make it up to the rooftop bar you'll find a little slice of the Mediterranean when the sun shines on the planters full of lavender and olive trees.
Breakfast included temptations like granola with saffron poached pears, that Instagram staple, avocado on toast (with chorizo and feta) and paprika sautéed potatoes. All very necessary for the next twelve hour shift on fashion's frontline.
