Rihanna knows how to up the style stakes, but this time the singer has gone back in time an refashioned one of our favourite Noughties looks: dress over jeans.
When it comes to sartorial standing Rihanna can rarely ever do any wrong. So chic, so directional is her offering that we find ourselves bowing down to the alter of Riri at least once a week.
In fact, we are yet to find an outfit we wouldn’t want repurposed in our own wardrobes (even the yellow Met Gala dress that spun a thousand pizza memes).
This week Rihanna pulled hard on our nostalgic heart strings when she posted a picture of herself wearing a lot of Noughties trends. The most noticeable? A dress over trousers.
It has been quite some time since we have even entertained that grungy idea of a sheer dress layered over a white t-shirt worn with high waisted blue wash mom jeans. In fact, the last time we tried such a look, we were MSN messengering our besties straight after school and crying when we dropped out of their MySpace Top 5.
As predicted in true Rihanna style, the Fenty designer made it look like a piece of cake. Taking the outfit to a whole new level of Noughties nostalgia with crystal hair slides and a pearl choker, Rihanna has inspired us to dig back into our style archives and take on the look for the summer.
Rihanna isn’t the only one bringing back this tricky trend; Bella Hadid was also spotted taking on a sheer dress and jeans, while plus-size blogger Gabi Fresh gave us big wrap dress and jeans vibes.
Not sure how to do it? Here’s the three tips you need to take on this trend like Rihanna.
1. It’s as much about the jeans as it about the dress. For it to feel seasonal go for a washed denim, a classic light blue wash will do it. When it comes to the fit you want to avoid skinny jeans as under a dress this will look a lot like leggings; opt for straight leg pairs and preferably high waisted. If it’s a grungier look you seek definitely find a pair with frayed hems or something that feels a little distressed.
2. The dress. You have two options: sheer or wrap. For sheer layering in a t-shirt (one that is close fitting to your body) is essential. As is choosing a dress in a block colour. Make like Rihanna and take on lilac over pink, it’s just the right level of girly and grunge without this look becoming too saccharine.
3. For those wanting to repurpose all those printed wrap dresses you bought for weddings, now is the time. The bolder the print the better. You want the dress to hit mid-calf so that you can still see the jeans underneath.
