When it comes to wardrobe heroes that see editors from London to Paris in style, basics top the list, says Stylist’s fashion director Lucy Reber – although don’t forget a statement trouser.
Fashion month is a dash. It doesn’t seem to matter how far ahead I’ve been thinking about it, or what special plans I have for my wardrobe. It always creeps up when I feel most busy and least prepared. Having said that, it is truly the highlight of every season. Getting to roam the fashion capitals of the world with my much-loved teammates, seeing new and inspiring things is a joy.
The shows are a glorious spectacle and the street style you see while attending can sometimes be even better. While seeing all these lovely things, it can be easy to feel that one’s own wardrobe is lacking. But after nearly 15 years of attending shows, I’ve learned a crucial lesson: to stick to the modern classics that I love. As heavenly as the shows are, they also mean long days on your feet in often changeable weather, so your fashion week wardrobe must be practical. Rather than channelling fashion director elegance, I often end up feeling a little more girl-guide chic – and frankly, I’m fine with that.
There are a few pieces that I would argue have been must-haves for the shows the entire time I’ve been attending. An oversized trench is perfect for sheltering from showers, but light enough to wear in the crush waiting to be seated. A ludicrously capacious bag is a must for carrying everything you’ll need, from a notebook to a mini make-up bag and – crucially – snacks. And flat shoes are non-negotiable. Although heels can look elegant, flats make getting from one side of London to the other in an hour an altogether more pleasant experience.
What all editors want from their show wardrobes is an air of calm practicality, with the addition of an ‘of the moment’ piece to keep things interesting. Stylist’s executive fashion director Kitty, editor Alix and I have it nailed for the autumn/winter 2025 show season (and we all got the wide-leg trouser and Adidas trainer memo). Read on to see what actually made it to the shows with us this season.
Lucy Reber, fashion director
You cannot go wrong with a trench, and this one with big shoulders is my update for the new season. I want to wear brightly coloured retro trainers with everything at the moment, so I have kept the rest of my outfit super simple with navy trousers and a plain white T-shirt.

Serpentine chain necklace, Mejuri, £448
Kitty McGee, executive fashion director
Wide-leg trousers are the shape of the moment and were a reccurring outfit choice for us all at the shows. A pleat-front pair, like these from Me+Em, feel even more relevant. Kitty styles them with a low-key knit and a high-necked Skims T-shirt that she swears by.

Tailored wide tapered trousers, Me+Em, £225
Alix Walker, editor
Alix is great at incorporating colour in her day to day looks, as these olive trousers prove. She’s also updated the classic trench coat with a simple check, while a white cotton shirt and trainers pull everything together.

Checked utility trench, Cos, £225
Cotton forever shirt, Me+Em, £150
Kitty
Although a definite investment buy, I’ve seen Kitty rock this blazer everywhere from a friend’s winter wedding to Stylist Live and it never fails to impress. She’s used it to dress up some brilliant Uniqlo denim and elegant ankle boots with a crucially walkable heel.
Shop Kitty’s outfit:
Raey exaggerated wool blend blazer, Matches, £595
Lucy
This elegant collarless coat pulls my all-black look together. It’s from the Uniqlo:C collection and is sadly sold out – but I’ve linked to a similar cropped version here. I’m really loving belts at the moment, they’re a quick way to make a simple look feel modern.
Shop Lucy’s outfit:
Slim fit long sleeve top, Cos, £35
The Frankie Shop Ripley trousers, Net-a-porter, £194
Kitty
Even Kitty’s jeans are wide-legged; opt for a black pair to keep things smart and pulled together. Wear high-waisted jeans with a cropped lightweight jacket to balance out proportions. Then layer over an of-the-moment slim knit cardigan, to keep the February chill at bay.

Utility crop parka, Me+Em, £395
