She may have described her personal style as "ripping off Jane Birkin", but there's no denying Alexa Chung's influence on British fashion - from the abundance of peter pan collars and loafers to smock dresses on the high street, to the popularity of the Alexa Mulberry satchel. As the TV presenter/British Fashion Council Ambassador/soon-to-be-author is awarded the British Style Award for a third year running at the British Fashion Awards, we look back at Alexa's most influential looks.
1. Brogues and/or loafers
Before the kitten heel made a comeback, Alexa made flats on the red carpet seem fresh and young again in a sea of sky-high heels. Her love of androgynous footwear, from chunky loafers to mannish brogues was soon widespread.
2. Charlotte Olympia Kitty Flats
These adorable, black velvet slippers with a kitten's face on them (by British footwear designer Charlotte Olympia) have been spotted countless times on Alexa Chung, and soon Katy Perry, Beyonce and Taylor Swift were all wearing them. Now imitations are available across the high street.
3. Pinafores
Whether denim or navy cord, Alexa has a penchant for pinafores, and thanks to her the pinafore has moved from schoolgirl staple to hipster uniform of choice, especially layered over a breton t-shirt or blouse.
4. The Alexa
After spotting Alexa carrying a classic Mulberry men's briefcase in a magazine, the label's Creative Director Emma Hill decided to create a bag in Alexa's honour. The bag was so popular Mulberry's profits have quadrupled in a recession, and the satchel design spawned hundreds of high street (and designer) copies.
5. Peter pan collars
From the shirt teamed with a Philip Lim tux on the red carpet, to peeking out from underneath a grey sweater, Alexa's love of peter pan collars was quickly copied up and down the country, and similar shirts popped up all over the high street. Now the collar has become a statement accessory in its own right, available on its own from Zara and Petit Bateau to be attached to an outfit.
6. The Barbour jacket/breton t-shirt/ankle boot festival uniform
OK, so she's not the first person to wear a Barbour jacket, but after Alexa donned one with a breton t-shirt and denim cut-offs, it swiftly became the festival uniform of choice.
7. Smock dresses
Alexa's love of girl-like, vintage smock dresses was widely copied, so much so that Alexa said in a recent interview "I got really bored of smock dresses and loafers for a while".
8. Cut-off denim shorts
Alexa could be credited for popularising the denim cut-off short, seen on the legs of nearly every teenage girl this summer.
9. Nautical outerwear
Be it a navy peacoat or this sailor jacket, we remember a brief obsession we had with nautical-inspired coats - and blame Alexa entirely for this. A similar version to the jacket pictured was sold in Topshop.
