From shopping preloved to experimenting with colour and animal print, Stylist’s fashion team shares the style tips and tricks they’re following for the year ahead.

As the new year unfolds, we’re welcoming in fresh starts, new challenges and maybe even a few exciting opportunities. Whether it’s starting a fitness routine or picking up a hobby, now’s the time to take stock, regroup and look ahead. And that includes reassessing our style goals for 2025 with a view to giving our wardrobes a revamp.

Maybe this is the year you’ll finally master the art of capsule dressing: streamlining your look with all the fashion essentials that never fail. Or, perhaps you’re looking to experiment with bold prints to make a statement. It might even be as simple as rediscovering the joy in pieces you already own and finding inventive ways to make the most of them.

To help inspire you, Stylist’s fashion team have shared their style promises for the year ahead. Read on to find out their expert style tips and what they’ll be doing to keep their wardrobes fresh in 2025.

Kitty McGee, executive fashion director

“I definitely want to experiment a little bit more. Fashion can be so exciting, and although I love uniform dressing for its ease and time-saving qualities, I definitely get into style ruts, which means I don’t enjoy getting dressed as much as I could.

I dress up to go out so rarely that I often feel quite overwhelmed at the thought of wearing something polished. This year, I hope I can find some chic new eveningwear options to wear for dinners and friends’ 40ths, all of which are on the horizon this year. I recently bought some new earrings from Missoma. Another pair I’m obsessed with are from Completedworks, so jewellery will be my starting point.”

Lucy Reber, fashion director

“I want to bring the joy back into getting dressed. I’m a really practical shopper: if something doesn’t instantly fit into my wardrobe, I am not buying it. This means I have a sea of basics, and while I love them, it doesn’t always feel totally inspiring.

“Colour is where I’m going to start. I love the rich browns and pale yellows that came through on the spring/summer 2025 catwalks. Even if I start with a lemon yellow knit to wear with jeans, I feel like switching up my usual colours will give me a lift.”

“My style resolution this year is to be more inventive with layering, and particularly through jewellery. I was lucky enough to receive some beautiful pieces for Christmas, and I’m excited to mix and match them. I love how layering necklaces and bracelets adds depth to outfits, and this is something I’m eager to incorporate into my own style.

“I’m also hoping to experiment with prints. I’m very minimalist in my style choices, but lately, I’ve been drawn to animal print. To start, I’ll try introducing leopard print through shoes and accessories, as it feels like a great way to ease into wearing more patterns.

“Finally, I’ll be shopping preloved and selling my old, unwanted clothes to give them a second life in someone else’s wardrobe. Secondhand fashion is a great way to find unique pieces, like my beloved fluffy faux-fur coat and kitten heels that I bought in a charity shop over a decade ago. They’re hidden gems in my collection.”
