From jewellery trends to country music, Stylist spoke to influencer Yanin Taylor about discovering her personal style and what to do if you’re struggling to find yours…

“I don’t really keep up with what’s popular,” says Yanin Taylor, content creator, influencer and Pandora ambassador when asked about what trends she’s tapping into this season. “However, I’m so here for the resurgence of cowboy boots,” she adds with an easy smile. “Cowboy boots are my absolute jam.”

It could be said that it’s tricky being an influencer, especially one who puts style at the very forefront of their content. Opening oneself up to the world of social media and its brutal scrutiny is a bold move when placing a greater emphasis on how you look and, naturally, what you’re wearing.

However, Taylor’s Instagram doesn’t feel (for want of a better phrase) very ‘influencer’. Yes, it’s clear she loves fashion but her aesthetic is in no way showy. In fact, it’s her uniqueness, her penchant for oversized denim waistcoats, stacked rings and beaten-up band tees that make her so interesting to chat to.

Plus, we wanted to find out a bit more about what personal style means to someone like Taylor and her advice to those who might be experiencing a style crisis (disclaimer: cowboy boots are always an option).

Look back on your younger fashion choices with fondness

“I moved to the UK from Thailand when I was seven. It must have been my eighth or ninth birthday party and my mum tried to put me in a pair of purple leggings and a bright green jumper. I knew immediately that the colours didn’t work, so demanded to dress myself – this was my first real fashion memory!

“I was definitely the type of person who liked experimenting. My friendship groups during my teens were all very different, so I was constantly being inspired by their clothes and their attitudes.

“I used to look back at all of my old Tumblr pictures and think that my style was a bit haphazard and all over the place, but now I realise I was just pushing boundaries. Today, my style is like an eclectic mix of film and music video influences or just funny things I’ve picked from the street and different places I’ve visited.

“What’s important about personal style is being able to try new things and not care what people think. This attitude has given me the freedom to dress up every day and discover what I’m comfortable with.”

Always stay true to your influences

“Music has always been my main source of inspiration. I’m actually the biggest country music fan (and have been for the last four years), and I would say that my style definitely reflects this mild obsession. In many ways my style has gone full circle because I’m wearing a lot more vintage pieces, albeit with a country edge.

“Travel would definitely be number two after music in terms of influence – I definitely dress according to my destination. For example, if I’m going to Paris my wardrobe will be super chic and minimal, with a monochrome colour palette that’s easy to dress up or down. Paris is a great place to feel inspired by street style.

“When I’m in LA, my style is completely different. I feel like I put in a lot more effort, when actually the whole vibe there is to look effortlessly put together! Every time I visit I love going to flea markets and vintage stores.

“My ultimate carry-on pieces when travelling anywhere in the world would be a classic white or vintage band T-shirt, high-waisted Levi’s and a pair of flat back boots. It’s a timeless combo that I can dress up or down with pieces of my favourite Pandora jewellery or a cool jacket.”

Make jewellery an important part of your personal style

“My personal jewellery style is pretty unique. I love minimal pieces and statement pieces, chunky rings to really thin stackable bands. I just like mixing loads of different elements together.

“Some of my favourite jewellery pieces are from the Pandora ME range. I love how you can personalise them with different charms and links to suit your mood or individual style. Plus, I’m really into the idea of pairing mixed metals together, which the Pandora collections allow me to do.

“When it comes to styling my jewellery, it very much depends on the outfit. If I’m wearing something that has a lot of bright colours or prints, I’ll probably just do very minimal jewellery styling. If I’m wearing all black, and it’s very simple, I will probably play with something a bit more statement.

“When building a capsule wardrobe or finding jewellery pieces that sum up your style, it’s my belief that you should always have a mixture of old and new. I still have pieces from my teenage years that I still wear today. It offers up such a nice style contrast, while still holding onto precious memories.”

When finding your own style, always experiment

“I do find it hard to describe my style, but then again, I’m the type of girl that has a hundred tabs open on my laptop. In many ways, my style is representative of what’s going on in my head. I feel like I don’t really belong in a certain group, I just have my own kind of vibe going on.

“As I said, I never really fit in with certain tribes, which probably explains why my friendship groups were very different from one another. I think sometimes being a bit of a chameleon is best because you can just hop in and out of whatever look you like, right?

“If I could give some advice to my younger self, it would be to just keep on doing what you’re doing and ignore the noise. I’ve been lucky in the fact that I was pretty fearless from such a young age. This changed somewhat when I became an influencer and started to get swayed by people’s negative comments. Thankfully, I snapped out of that and am now much stronger as a result.

“My advice to those who might be struggling to find their own style identity is to just experiment. Play with fashion as much as you can. Go into shops and try things on. Be brave and try something a little bit wild.”
