Emmys 2019: The surprising colour combination that ruled the red carpet

The Emmy Awards red carpet (or in this instance purple carpet) was a brilliant display of fashion, but there was one surprising trend that came out of Los Angeles and we are seriously into it…

Last night’s Emmy Awards – television’s biggest awards – were a triumph on all levels. Phoebe Waller-Bridge took home four Emmy awards for Fleabag and proceeded to live her best life. Michelle Williams used her lead actress acceptance speech to appeal for equal pay and to champion women of colour, and the red carpet was flush with glorious gowns.

However, as guests arrived at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, a surprising colour trend emerged: pink and red.

Typically a colour combination we have avoided, when done well red and pink have served up some of our favourite sartorial moments: remember Taylor Swift at the 2016 Grammy Awards and Emma Stone at the 2014 Met Gala? And more recently we dabbled with the colour combination again when Kate Middleton stepped out in a pink Stella McCartney dress offset with red hairband from Juliette Botterill and red pointed courts for Archie’s christening.

Ordinarily worn with caution, pink and red has never been so celebrated as it was last night.

Mandy Moore, Taraji P. Henson, Marisa Tomei, Susan Kelechi Watson and Zoe Kazan took the colour combination to new heights and with such success we can’t remember why we thought it was a tricky trend to begin with.

In custom Brandon Maxwell, Mandy Moore transformed red and pink in the most sophisticated way. A long column red skirt with thigh-high split and pink satin off-the-shoulder sleeves is just the ticket for this tricky trend.

Leave it to Taraji P. Henson and Vera Wang to make red and pink look so ethereal. Swathes of chiffon and dramatic cape sleeves make for a romantic red carpet win.

As well as being spotted in a cute twinning moment with her This Is Us co-star, Mandy Moore, Susan Kelechi Watson brings a more directional take on red and pink with of-the-moment puff satin sleeves courtesy of Christian Siriano and paired-back hair and make-up.

Definitely the most vibrant of the pink and red wearers, this one-shouldered Ralph & Russo gown is a smash hit. Brava, Marisa Tomei.

In a more gothic take on the colour trend, Zoe Kazan creates dramatic shapes in Gucci.
