Meet the model who stars in our film noir extravaganza…

Take one issue of Stylist that just happens to be our biggest ever. Add a highly ambitious fashion shoot to reflect a/w 2013’s film noir mood, then throw in an actual video to be shot at the same time. The piece of the jigsaw that would pull this together? An amazing model who could effortlessly transform herself into a leading lady for both print and film. It wasn’t a job for just anyone. Luckily for us, Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha isn’t just anyone. She is, without a doubt, the most enthusiastic model Stylist has ever worked with.

While switching between characters on the shoot, the 24 year old admitted she is “very theatrical; I’m a very dramatic person. Even if I put on sad music, I’ll be crying.”

Coco (who was christened Mikaela but goes by the endearment her mother used to call her) is no stranger to being centre of attention. She was discovered aged 14 at an Irish dance competition and was working on major campaigns a few years later.

“I got a six-month contract with Steve Meisel. He was my mentor, the first shoot I did [with him] was for Italian Vogue. I had no idea; I was like, ‘What is Dolce?’”

The prolific tweeter – who turned up early to our shoot hand-in-hand with her husband – is much savvier now. She’s a vocal supporter of The Model Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation that recently got a New York State bill passed to ensure models under 18 are protected by the same labour laws that apply to child performers. “I’ve met with senators to discuss the underage model issue and agents often ask me to talk to new girls about the industry. I’ve had bad experiences. It took me 10 years to get it so why not share that?”

But it’s not all politics and posing. “On my days off, I stay in bed and watch bad TV like Toddlers And Tiaras and don’t even shower,” she confesses at our shoot. Citing Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Elvis as her fantasy dinner guests, she heads off with her husband after the shoot, not to a SoHo hotspot but to The Cheesecake Factory. Sometimes a girl needs her comfort food, even if she is one of the world’s most successful models.
