Beyoncé stole the show and cemented the colour of the season, Rihanna achieved the impossible, and H&M surprised us with its next designer collaboration
If you were anywhere near Instagram over the weekend, you’ll have noticed that there was something going on in a certain desert valley in southern California: the one and only Coachella. The festival, which runs over two consecutive weekends, kicked off its first leg on Friday. But it certainly wasn’t all about the music – cue your Coachella fashion memo…
The next H&M designer collaboration was announced
It seems like only yesterday we were sharpening our elbows to score a piece of Erdem x H&M (which we still love), but now it’s time to start getting excited for the next: Moschino. Or Moschino [tv] H&M, to give it its full tongue-twisting title. The upcoming collaboration was announced by Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott at his annual Coachella party on Saturday evening via an Instagram live call with model Gigi Hadid.
“I am so excited about Moschino [tv] H&M,” said Scott today of the announcement. “My life’s work has been to connect with people through fashion, and with this collaboration I’ll be able to reach more of my fans than I’ve ever had the ability to do.”
Both Scott and Hadid were wearing pieces from the collection, which will be available from 8 November. So, what can we expect? Well, aside from absolute mania on the day (Scott’s fandom is huge), the collection will likely be a little bonkers – after all, Scott’s previous Moschino collections have used the likes of Barbie and My Little Pony as inspiration.
Rihanna did the impossible…
…and pulled off this outfit.
Seriously, who else could do that? The singer was front row at Beyoncé’s epic performance (more on which later) and dressed up for the occasion in a dress by Belgian label Y/Project with a pair of wader-like heeled boots by the brand’s collaboration with Ugg. Ah RiRi, we love you and your ability to make the most questionable footwear look ridiculously good. She was later spotted in a Gucci balaclava. Because, why not?
Beyoncé cemented yellow as the colour of the summer
“Thank you for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline Coachella,” said Beyoncé midway through her headline performance. And what a performance it was. There was a Destiny’s Child reunion, as well as appearances from husband Jay Z and sister Solange. But what really got people buzzing was the hidden meanings. The entire performance was an homage to black culture and America’s historically black colleges and universities. Cue a glorious yellow-clad marching band and Bey in a cropped yellow hoodie complete with her very own ‘Beta Delta Kappa’ sorority crest. Proof, if we needed it, that yellow really is the colour of the season (and that Bey needs to add that hoodie to her merch line pronto).
Cowboy boots have replaced gladiator sandals
Gladiator sandals have finally had their day. We have Céline and Balenciaga to thank for their successor: cowboy boots. It’s taken a few months to sink in but we’re definitely coming round to them, and Coachella has really helped. What’s clear is that they are a far more practical festival shoe – they’re sturdy and protective (there’s nothing worse than big crowds and open toes. Ouch.) Plus, they really do look good with pretty much anything – shorts, dresses, trousers. In more good news, the flower crown seems to have died a death, too.
