Step aside skinny soles; where sandals are concerned, it’s the bigger the better.
Few characters sum up Y2K fashion quite like Bang On The Door’s Groovy Chick with her crop top, capri pants and, you guessed it, chunky sandals. So I’ve turned to the beloved children’s cartoon yet again for style inspiration as 00s style is standing strong. And I’m far from alone: the chunky flip-flop is one of fashion’s most coveted items this season, thanks in part to two other 00s stars, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
The Olsen twins are the brains behind one of the fashion industry’s most talked about minimalist luxury labels, The Row, which stocks neutral-toned silk shirts, blazers and dresses that sell for upwards of £1,000. The star of the show when it comes to footwear, however, is the Ginza leather and suede platform flip-flop, £960.
Spotted on the feet of Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Monikh Dale and Ashley Olsen herself, the chunky flip-flop quickly earned a place on many fashion wishlists. And for those unwilling to spend almost a month’s rent on the shoes, the style soon trickled down to the high street, where a wide variety of options are now available.
The big draw of this sandal shape comes from the platform, which elevates (sorry) the laidback look of your basic beach-ready flip-flop to make it more fashion-forward with extra height (and the impact-absorbing sole adds additional comfort). Plus, you can style them with almost any outfit, whether you’re wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, denim shorts or a fitted suit.
Scroll on for the top six styles on my personal wishlist if you, too, are keen to find a shoe that will go with (almost) any outfit.
Cos sculptural Eva flip-flops
Made from EVA, a rubber-like material, these Cos flip-flops will add a spring to your step. Plus, this means they’re water-friendly so wearing them to the beach is a breeze.
FitFlop F-Mode leather flatform toe-post sandals
FitFlop’s flip-flops (quite the tongue-twister) are designed with comfort in mind, with a highly cushioned sole and all-leather lining for extra durable comfort. They’re available in white, black, navy, beige and tan, so there’s something to suit a wide range of styles.
Jeffrey Campbell 'Flying Private' flip-flops
Available in five shades, Jeffrey Campbell’s chunky flip-flops should suit almost every style and outfit. Crafted from faux leather, they’re suitable for vegans and the exaggerated proportions add that fashion-forward touch.

The Row Ginza two-tone leather and suede platform flip flops
I had to include the It shoe that reignited the chunky flip-flop craze. While the black shade is a little more popular, the contrasting white style is striking. If I won the lottery, I’d buy both.

Topshop Jonah footbed sandal
Topshop has long been the place to go for fashion-forward footwear. With an extra-thick strap, they cover more of the foot so are perfect for running everyday errands.
New Look brown leather-look chunky toepost sandals
Leave it to high street store New Look to create a more affordable option of the trend. These leather-look sandals are chic, incredibly comfortable and come in black and brown.
