Festive wardrobe looking a little threadbare? Here are the only outfits you’ll need to sashay and sequin your way through party season…

When it comes to dressing up, everyone knows a different set of rules applies in the lead-up to Christmas.

We wear velvet as freely as cotton, metallics like they’re denim and even start showing up to the office in sequins.

That’s because when there’s such a slew of social engagements to contend with, it pays to have an outfit in your sartorial locker for all possible scenarios.

That’s why we’ve done our party-wear homework, to come up with a killer outfit for every occasion in your Christmas calendar.

Read on for inspiration aplenty, and consider the hard work done.

1. The office party

The annual work party can be a sartorial minefield.

How to choose the right ensemble that’s stylish yet comfortable, Christmassy but cool, special enough for the occasion while remaining appropriate to wear in front of your boss?

Look to this super luxe-looking velvet dress in purple, with its voluminous sleeves and draped neckline.

Pair with silver ankle boots, a matching silver chain bag and pair of statement earrings for a look that screams Studio 54 with a festive twist.

2. The low-key house party

It’s the weekend before Christmas, and you’re heading to a friend’s place for some casual drinks that may or may not descend into an all-night session of eggnog-fuelled carolling.

Want to look festive without making it look like you’ve put too much thought into it? No problem.

Keep toasty by layering this faux-leather biker jacket over your favourite chunky knit, paired with your best jeans and these crimson snake-effect ankle boots for a low-key look that’s all kinds of cool.

Accessorise with a gold chainmail cross-body bag and a pair of sparkly dangly earrings to add a touch of glam to proceedings

3. Impromptu post-work drinks

December wouldn’t be the same without the constant, could-happen-any-minute promise of somebody suggesting an after-work drink.

So what’s the answer for when you just can’t predict if it’ll be bed by 8pm or McDonald’s on the bus home and an office hangover?

The perfect day-to-night outfit is what.

This gorgeous high-neck, sea-foam green dress paired with knee high black boots is completely office-appropriate while it also wouldn’t look out of place in any bar.

And for an added conference-to-cocktails glow-up, just add a glitzy chain bag and shoulder-grazing earrings.

4. The twixtmas night out

You’re in the dead zone between Christmas and New Year, when one of your friends offers you the chance to swerve yet another game of Pictionary with a night on the tiles.

If you’ve not had an occasion to get the sequins out before now, here’s your opportunity to go all-in.

Pair this stunning sparkly blouse with faux-leather shorts (layered up with tights, of course) for an undeniably festive yet still ultra-cool night-out look.

Add a pair of chunky lace-up ankle boots (so on-trend right now) and sparkly hair accessories clipped loosely to the hair, and you’re ready to shake off the Christmas cobwebs on the dance floor.

5. New Year's Eve

If there’s ever an occasion to go a little OTT with your outfit, it’s New Year’s Eve.

No matter your plans – be it night out, house party or cocktails – it’s perfectly acceptable to go a bit bouji to ring in the new year.

With that in mind, we suggest this statement purple ensemble, based around this floaty blouse / trouser combo.

Pair them with hot pink pumps for a pop of interest, and this oversized ombre faux fur coat for the dash from cab to club.

The shaggy number is so glam you won’t want to surrender it to the cloak room…
