Why iconic actor Catherine O’Hara is owning the red carpet

With full Burberry checks, dynamic snake print Coperni and custom Oscar de la Renta, Catherine O’Hara’s press tour looks for the new Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice movie have us mesmerised.

The release of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is imminent. Out in the UK on 6 September, all of a sudden I’m seeing film posters everywhere for the second instalment of this cult film. The cast is incredible, of course: Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci. But it is Catherine O’Hara, who played the pleasingly named Delia Deetz in the first film and is reprising the role for the sequel, who is catching my attention on the press trail.

We all know and love the fabulous Catherine O’Hara. For me, she is synonymous with Christmas: the chic, camel-coated mum in Home Alone who cries a distraught ‘Kevin’ to the camera as she realises she’s left her son at home. More recently she has captivated us as the enchanting Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek. Bringing us killer lines – “I’m positively bedevilled with meetings, etc” and “Fold in the cheese” – while dressed, always, for the height of drama. You get the impression that Moira Rose uses clothing and style both for armour and self-expression. Plus, she can really work a wig.

Canadian designer Deborah Hanson and her assistant Darci Cheyne were the costume designers for the show and were inspired by British socialite Daphne Guinness for Moira’s look – the ethos was more is more, with lots of dramatic monochrome and statement jewels. Pieces from designers including Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Prada and Balmain all played a part in achieving these killer looks.

Recently, O’Hara has been serving up looks that even Moria would envy. Last night at the London Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice premier in Leicester Square, she stole the show in an all-black ensemble by British designer Simone Rocha. O’Hara has been working with stylist and writer, Andrew Gelwicks, who also styles Winnie Harlow and Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer). Other triumphs from the pair include a custom-made Oscar de la Renta for this week’s Venice Film Festival, a full snake print suit by Coperni and bold Burberry checks for the press tour (pictured above).

Read on for all the looks to know.

Simone Rocha in London

This stunning look from Simone Rocha’s autumn/winter 2024 collection is pitch perfect: a London designer for the London premiere. A chic parka, with a beaded corset belt and tulle skirt – all in solid black. Perfect for the film’s gothic theme.

Coperni in New York

This dynamic, geometric snake print suit is from Coperni’s sci-fi tribute autumn/winter show. The perfect thing for slick New York, O’Hara looks contemporary, and I love the matching bag and boots.

Custom Oscar de la Renta at the Venice Film Festival

An elegant and statement choice from Oscar de la Renta. The sculptural black neck collar and flower details give a nod to Delia Deetz art career. Love.

Petar Petrov at the Venice Film Festival

I love the monochrome stripy nod to Beetlejuice with this fabulous two-piece from Petar Petrov. It’s slick, modern and cool. I absolutely want to be Catherine O’Hara when I grow up.
