The colour of the moment – bold red – is not only perfect for the festive season, but it’s also set to be huge for spring/summer 2024. Invest in these key pieces now for a perfect Christmas party outfit that will still be right on trend for spring.

Red is having a moment. It was the standout colour for autumn/winter 2023, taking over from pink as the colour to be seen in and gracing the catwalks of Prada, Loewe and even Valentino, who spearheaded the whole pink trend with its Pink PP show in autumn/winter 2022. It was the Barbie film’s release in July and Margot Robbie’s subsequent press tour wardrobe that brought all things pink to a crescendo. The fashion world was ready for a strong new colour to take the lead.

Gwyneth Paltrow adopted a top-to-toe bold red look when she attended the British Fashion Awards in an archive Valentino look from 1965 and Greta Lee and Kendall Jenner adopted the hue for their red carpet looks at the Academy Museum Gala in LA. But red isn’t just for evening events: the interesting twist on red for autumn/winter 2023 is that the colour is being used for bold tailored separates and simple mannish overcoats. This is part of the reason why it was so ubiquitous: it was just as likely to be seen on a sharp suit in the office as it was for your Christmas party dress.

For spring/summer 2024, designers are focusing on bold primary colours, and red in particular. Sarah Burton’s final show for Alexander McQueen featured numerous lipstick red looks, while Hermes’s show was a celebration of the colour in hues ranging from oxblood to bright poppy.

It’s no surprise, then, that we adopted red for the opening trend for the Stylist Live 2023 catwalk. Perfectly styled in clean-lined separates to make a dynamic premier sequence, scroll down to shop the looks from the catwalk and add a festive refresh to your winter wardrobe.
