Beyoncé’s latest album has brought the cowboy look back. Here’s how to wear the trend with cowboy boots, fringing and plenty of denim.
We probably don’t need to highlight how Beyoncé is breaking into the country music space with a serious bang. But while the radio is blasting out Cowboy Carter and the singer is laying her cards down, down, down, down, we’re taking a moment to appreciate the outfits – especially the Guess white vest and denim chaps ensemble – that are pushing us even further towards one of our favourite trends. In fact, Cowboy Carter seems to only have encouraged it, especially on social media, where fringed outfits, double denim and cowboy hats are more prevalent than ever.
According to fashion search engine Lyst, searches for ‘western boots’ have increased by 23% over the past six months, and ‘western shirts’ by 41%. Of course, this rise came before Beyoncé’s head-turning album, which was released on 29 March, but we’ve been influenced by the western style for some time now. In January we saw Louis Vuitton focus on cowboy fashion for its menswear autumn/winter 2024 show, and a few months before that, the ‘coastal cowgirl’ trend took over social media with plenty of cowboy boots, denim shorts and billowy midi skirts.
But what makes the western aesthetic so popular? Well, probably because it’s incredibly practical – unlike the Barbie pink craze, which was fun while the film was out but afterwards left us with cosplay-like looks. Cowboy boots, by nature, are incredibly comfortable. They’ll also see you through almost any weather and will help keep your legs warm while wearing skirts or shorts, too. There’s also an incredibly strong focus on denim, which makes up a large proportion of most of our wardrobes already. And more fashion-forward pieces such as cowboy hats or fringed fashion items are there for those who want to make more of a statement styling choice.
The western look can be tailored to your personal preference via a light touch cowboy boot and jeans situation or a full-on fringed outfit – there really are no rules to getting it right. We would stress, however, to steer away from sparkles, as these will inspire more of a festival look than a chic fashion focus. We’ve even handpicked a few of our favourite pieces below for inspiration.
Fabulous fringing
Fringing is definitely a more fashion-forward western trend, so probably best for those looking to lean into the aesthetic. Don’t be frightened into thinking you have to go all-out with chaps and a hat to match. A fringed bag will tread lightly on the trend, like this FatFace find, while a fringed jacket takes a bit more commitment. And with festival season on the way, you’re sure to get good use out of any fringing you reach for.

Cowboy boots have been trending for quite some time now, becoming a go-to for festivals and summer-ready outfits. Thanks to Cowboy Carter, it’s safe to say they’re not going anywhere this season. For those looking to very gently touch on the western trend, a shorter, neutral shade of boot will achieve the look with minimal effort. Or, if you’re hoping to make more of a statement, a knee-high colourful boot will do the trick.

BUY NOWDutiful denim
Double, triple and even quadruple denim was spotted all over the most recent fashion week runways, so we’re already in love with the fabric. Unsurprisingly, it works incredibly well for the western theme, so be sure to pull out a pair of your trusty jeans and throw on a beloved denim jacket on top. Or opt for a jumpsuit or denim co-ord to be totally matching. After all, it’s one of the hardest-working fabrics in our wardrobes, whether you’re riding a horse or simply taking a stroll.
