The coolest shirt to have in your wardrobe takes its cues from menswear

Hunting for the right shirt can be a never-ending task, but Parisian brand Marie Marot has perfected this staple.

If you’ve ever stood in a department store dressing room with an armful of shirts that don’t quite fit right weighing you down, then we feel you. The perfect shirt – slightly oversized, a collar that’s bold but not stiff, button placement in just the right place – is a tall order.

Marie Marot, a Parisian brand loved by industry insiders, gets this just right – and its Colleen shirt is the perfect staple to add to your autumnal wardrobe. When designing this shirt, Marot was looking to create a piece she couldn’t find herself in stores.

“I’m passionate about Winchester shirts and there weren’t many for women in the market,” she explains. “A Winchester shirt is a dress shirt style that is coloured, checked or otherwise patterned, but that has contrasting collar and cuffs – immortalised by Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street and, more recently, by Peaky Blinders. Over time it has become our ‘MM signature’, like our Colleen shirt.”

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Marot’s shirts, and the way they’re styled, is that despite their menswear roots they remain deeply feminine. “My shirts have to be sensual,” she says.

“We do this by working on the placement of the buttonhole to give the option of incorporating a glimpse of your underwear if you choose to, and a slightly oversized cut. Colleen, our contrast collar and cuffs shirt, was designed to look powerful and conquering. An iron fist in a velvet glove.” Sign us up.
