It’s suddenly freezing – here are the catwalk approved winter coats to invest in now

All of a sudden, it’s become so cold that leaving the house without a heavy coat seems like madness. Here are the key styles for AW23 – available to shop now and all styled up for the Stylist Live Catwalk.
A classic coat has always been on trend for us in the winter months. But it’s nice to see this wardrobe stalwart being given the sartorial respect it deserves. It was chic tailored trenches and timeless woollen overcoats that were the most-seen styles on the catwalks and the key pieces to invest in this season; buy now and you’ll be wearing them always.
For wool coat inspiration look to Italian fashion power houses Gucci and Prada, who both sent out classic tailored pieces in neutral black with simple red court shoes. Meanwhile, Bottega Venetta and Ferragamo both embraced a leather trench coat — a surprisingly versatile item which has already been adopted on the great British high street by John Lewis and Mango.
When it comes to styling, keep it grown-up for an expensive, pulled-together look. Layer neutral cream and oatmeal pieces under of-the-moment chocolate brown, or pair classic navy with a burgundy hue for pleasingly subtle looks that still make a statement. These super-chic pieces shouldn’t just be kept for day-to-day work wear. A mannish style is the ideal cover-up for evenings, and not just out of practicality. Add an outsized overcoat to a party look for perfect styling - there is nothing like adding an androgynous element to a hyper-feminine look to give it instant cool.
A coat is also the perfect piece to add to your basket now in preparation for post-Christmas discounts. This is one sale purchase that you’re never going to regret. The key thing to look for is luxe fabrics and simple shapes in neutral colours that will never date.
Here are the major coat styles from the Stylist Live Catwalk 2023 and the perfect items to style them with.
Forever Leather
This elegant leather trench will look just as good styled over washed-out jeans and ankle boots as over a grown-up shirt dress and knee-highs. Chocolate brown may be the colour of the moment, but you will have it forever.
Shop leather trench coat at John Lewis, £399
Shop Argyl dress at Ninety Percent, £310
Feeling Blue
A classic navy coat is always going to be a smart addition to your wardrobe. Mine is currently the most-worn piece in my wardrobe — I wear it with casual khakis, double denim or a full black look with heavy boots.
Shop Mari Italian merino roll neck at Cape Cove, £139
Shop Autograph wool blend shawl coat at M&S, £179
Shop Simone ribbed merino dress at A Day’s March, £175
Check Mate
This checked black and tan wool coat is perfect, because it makes a statement without being shouty. A wrap style is the perfect thing to cosy up in at this time of year and is perfect thrown over tailoring or a weekend look.
Shop check wrap coat at Albaray, £220
Shop Selene rib funnel neck at Ninety Percent, £250
Classic Camel
Although a camel coat is always a classic, the longline of this style makes it an instant knockout. Style over denim as below, or layer-up with crisp white shirt, grey cashmere knit, slim tailored trousers and a flat loafer for timeless elegance.
Shop Mrs Smith full length coat at Wonderlust, £270
Shop tailored denim jumpsuit at Jigsaw, £165
Layered Look
I am in love with this hooded trench from French label Ba&sh. Worn alone, it might be a little light for this time of year, but layer over a classic trench and padded jacket and it suddenly makes sense. For a real-life look, just add tights.
Shop kaan. Trench coat at Ba&sh, £430
Shop Clyde trench coat at Sezane, £275
Shop Will jacket at Sezane, £155
Contemporary Khaki
This oversized overcoat looks far more expensive than its £88 price tag. Style as a monochrome look, with cream accents to up the quiet luxury factor.
