Here is an update on the much-loved neck scarf for spring, as approved by Stylist’s fashion director, Lucy Reber. Read on for the best pieces to buy now and how to style them.

Do you ever feel as though your wardrobe is missing that one special accessory that will instantly make anything you wear more stylish?

This is what happened to me when I came across a chic triangle scarf at John Lewis. So affordable at £25, it offers a cosy wool blend to keep you warm and a portable of-the-moment layer.

Obviously, the neck scarf – or foulard, if you prefer – has been enjoying a resurgence for the past year or so. The best-dressed girls and boys of my acquaintance have been rocking this look as a small woollen necktie (Kiltane does a gorgeous cashmere version for £45 in an array of colours). Hailey Bieber also adopted the trend, styling hers as a hair accessory.

At Simone Rocha’s gorgeous autumn/winter 2025 show, several woollen neck scarves made their way down the catwalk, which seems to indicate this is a trend that will be sticking around for a while. And what I love about the John Lewis version is that the scarf is larger – it looks just as good draped over the shoulders of your coat as it does knotted at your neck or tied around your head. It’s still small enough to be thrown in your bag when the sun comes out but you can keep it on hand to add an extra element of warmth to a spring denim jacket or a lightweight padded coat.

We’re at an in-between point for our wardrobes: winter weather is still clinging on, but we are ready for a little update, so this seems to be the perfect purchase. Read on for the best to buy now.

This is the gorgeous scarf I’ve fallen in love with. I was torn between the neutral brown and bold red, but I opted for the latter as the rest of my outerwear is muted and could do with a lift.

I also love the red against a beige trench coat, which I think is such a chic way to wear this scarf, especially when styled with a striped cotton shirt, wide-leg trousers and a metallic trainer.

Cos fringed merino wool triangle scarf

I adore the fringe on this sort of modern-day shawl. The black colour keeps it cool, and it needs to be layered over minimalist clothes to keep it contemporary.

Cos has styled it to perfection here over a clean-line leather jacket and loose-cut indigo jeans with flat leather pumps. Just add some cool 90s sunglasses.

The stripe on this TBCo scarf really adds some punch to a look. I love the idea of it styled with a denim barn jacket, white T-shirt and jeans. Those crisp red and white stripes will really lift any look.
