Swap out your puffer for a trench – these are the most winter-appropriate styles to shop

With a cool and contemporary edge, this outerwear staple has proudly earned its place as one of the unassuming heroes of our transitional wardrobe.

OK, so we know what you’re thinking: the second the temperature drops, it’s all about the puffer jacket. But hear us out. Would you consider a classic trench instead? Far chicer than the padded puffer, the trench coat combines style with functionality – offering a balance of warmth and breathability that will see you through each and every element.

At the spring/summer 2024 shows, designers including Eudon Choi, Jeffrey Kalinsky at Theory and Wes Gordon at Carolina Herrera boasted striking iterations of this utilitarian style. And who could forget the Burberry’s signature trench? Worn on this season’s catwalks with billowing blouses and belt print dresses, it delivered a suitably dramatic yet all-together casual look.

John Lewis reported an increase in purchases by nearly a third versus last year, with customers leaving behind the puffer in favour of tailored trenches and formal coats. Given how temperamental the weather is right now, with heatwaves that last until lunchtime followed by chilly evening commutes, the rise in trenches should come as no real surprise.

Despite first being used for military purposes back in 1912, its timeless appeal transcends through different dress codes and decades. From Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s to Kate Bush’s appearance on Saturday Night Live, it has graced the wardrobes of some of the most stylish individuals for good reason.

With clean lines, a tailored cut and a clean silhouette, this wardrobe staple will add a dash of sophistication to any ensemble. A perfect partner for mom jeans, a pressed white T-shirt and a cushy cardigan, it pairs well with a thick cashmere scarf and suede sporty trainers for a contemporary finish.

Dressed up or down, it has a quiet versatility that transitions seamlessly from day to night, season to season. That is the magic of the trench – it works with whatever mood and the occasion, never losing its allure.

From wool to waterproof, there are plenty of winter-ready styles to shop this season. See Stylist’s edit below.
