Struggling to find socks that do it all without wearing out too quickly? Don’t worry, Team Stylist has you covered. Read our curated edit of the best pairs we’ve deemed to be the most comfortable and stylish.
When I was younger, the worst thing to unwrap on my birthday was a pair of socks. Honestly, nothing could feel more disappointing. But fast forward to this year, and guess what topped my wishlist? A stylish pair from Essentiel Antwerp. And honestly, I have no regrets.
A soft, well-made pair of socks is one of life’s little luxuries. They’re practical, comfortable and dare I say it… a great gift. Unlike larger purchases, such as coats, knits or shoes, socks are often something we forget to buy or replace, even though we wear them daily.
Having tried everything from trainer socks and knee-highs to ankle socks and those ‘footsie’ things that fly off at the slightest hint of movement, I’ve enlisted Team Stylist to share their favourite socks. Our criteria? Comfort, durability (because some socks look cute but rip after a couple of wears) and, of course, style.
From sporty running pairs to cosy-soft options, the best of the best are listed below. These are the ones you’ll want to wear now and forever with loafers, trainers and everything in between.
The everyday pair
M&S five-pack Sumptuously Soft ankle socks
“These are genuinely so soft,” says Stylist’s fashion director Lucy Reber. “I’ve got multiple pairs of the pale grey and have just invested in this neutral beige and brown set. They have just the right length so I can slightly slouch them down when worn with a trainer. The fabric is soft and cosy, but breathable. The perfect sock!”
Arket three-pack cotton-rib socks
“I swear by these lightweight Arket ribbed socks,” says Kitty McGee, Stylist’s executive fashion and beauty director. The charcoal is a particular favourite (you can buy them individually) – it’s the perfect grey. I wear them with everything from trainers to my trusty Birkenstock clogs. I love everything about them, from the thickness and the length to the ribbed detail, which feels delicate but looks cool.”

Calzedonia short ribbed socks
“Italian brand Calzedonia does brilliant socks and tights (as well as lovely swimwear and loungewear). Its short, ribbed cashmere socks come in a range of neutral shades and are a great option for colder days and travelling (and wearing at home). I love the green, grey and burgundy, but there are lots to choose from, as well as a longer-length option if you prefer,” says Kitty.
Essentiel Antwerp orange and off-white floral jacquard-knit mid-length socks
“I love using socks as a focal point in my outfits, and these are definitely a stylish pair. I pull mine up over the ankle and pair with colourful trainers (Asics Gel-Kayano, I’m looking at you). What I love most about them is the cotton blend. Despite the floral design, they’re not itchy or too tight like other fashion socks I’ve tried,” says Soraya Gaied Chortane, Stylist’s fashion assistant.

Oner Active three-pack tie-dye socks
“These tie-dye socks are brilliant for adding a little 90s pop of colour to even the dullest activewear outfit. I love that they fit snuggling just under my calves, giving my foot, ankle and achilles lots of support. They’re perfect for walking, cycling and chilling out, with a cushioned toe and heel for max comfort,” says Strong Women editor Miranda Larbi.
Lululemon three-pack Power Stride crew socks
“I absolutely swear by Lululemon for running socks. They’re comfortable and have the right level of compression. I’ve run marathons wearing mine and have never had so much as a blister, which is a testament to their sweat-wicking abilities. Invest in a few pairs and you won’t regret it,” says Miranda.
H&M three-pack Drymove sports socks
“I have a few pairs of expensive sports socks, but these ones from H&M Move are among my absolute favourites. Perfect for wearing with leggings or underneath jeans, they’re soft, comfortable and stylish. Plus, they come with DryMove technology, so they keep your feet dry no matter what you get up to,” says Strong Women senior writer Lauren Geall.

Varley Spencer sock
“I bought some socks from Varley the other day and they’re so warm and comfy. They have a boucle-effect yarn, which makes them ideal for padding around,” says Stylist’s editor Alix Walker.
Nordic Socks Ida wool socks
“Winter always brings that familiar chill, and no matter how many layers I add, my feet are the first to feel it. A lot of socks just aren’t up to the job, but then I came across Nordic Socks. Not only are they warm, but they come in so many cute styles that work with everything in my cold-weather wardrobe,” says Soraya.
