The sporty style took over the catwalks for spring/summer 2025, and now they’re about to take over your wardrobes, too…
Catwalk looks don’t always scream practicality (think micro miniskirts, low-slung jeans and ultra-sheer fabrics), but this user-friendly trend is one we can all get on board with. Seen all over Copenhagen Fashion Week for spring/summer 2025, rugby tops are the latest sportswear item to capture designers’ attention. As if to prove that kick-off has begun, fashion’s most influential figures are throwing their weight behind this sportswear staple: Rihanna, Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Chloë Sevigny and Taylor Swift are among its A-list fans.
Back on the runways, Scandi brand Baum Und Pferdgarten created bold looks where rugby tops took centre stage. Contrast-coloured styles were layered over shirts, added to sheer sequin midi skirts and completed with socks and loafers – a key way to keep the mini trend feeling preppy.

As cosy as a sweatshirt, a rugby shirt’s added collar and bold stripes make this warm-but-not-sweltering layer feel slightly more structured than other loungewear styles. So much so, you could happily wear one half-tucked into tailored trousers without feeling mismatched. It’s also the perfect weight to replace chunky knits on unpredictable weather days.

But what’s the easiest way to wear it? With jeans, of course. Get the designer feel (and extra warmth) by layering your chosen rugby top over another shirt (just like this street styler above) or simply over a white T-shirt. Add some mini Miu Miu-esque glasses or sunglasses and keep shoes flat for that off-duty look.
No matter how you choose to wear these shirts, here are seven of our favourites from House of Sunny, Baum Und Pferdgarten, H&M, M&S and more.
Best rugby tops to shop now
New Look brown long-sleeve top
Pantone’s mocha mousse shade is the colour of the year, so of course all things chocolately are taking over right now. Get in on the action with this slouchy striped top from New Look – and it’s under £20!
House Of Sunny logo shirt
Although found in the men’s section, London-label House of Sunny has so many pieces that can be unisex. This sage and cream striped polo will look effortless with baggy jeans and loafers.
Marks & Spencer striped rugby shirt
In sky blue or a zingy green colourway, this oversized shirt from M&S is a winner at under-£30. See how good it looks with loose-fit tailored trousers, too? Such an easy way to style them as part of your everyday uniform.
Damson Madder Remie rugby shirt
The weather forecast may be dull, but your wardrobes needn’t be thanks to this Damson Madder hot pink style. Here to liven up your favourite jeans from now on, you can reach for this every time you have one of those ‘I have nothing to wear’ days.
Reformation Anna rugby shirt
Showing us all how to stick to the preppy vibe, Reformation’s cropped style will look so good with shorts, socks and loafers for spring. For now, though, wear it with your favourite skirt, tights and boots.
H&M loose-fit polo shirt
Breton tops are nothing new, but the rugby style gives it a fresh feel, doesn’t it? Keep it sleek by teaming it with other monochrome pieces from your wardrobe for an easy-win outfit.
Baum Und Pferdgarten Jeannie shirt
Having shown several rugby tops on its spring/summer 2025 catwalk, of course Baum Und Pferdgarten has styles you can shop already. This one is available in four colours and we have a soft spot for all of them.
