Raincoats, padded jackets and sleek parkas have become the talk of the season, but it takes know-how to wear them well. Here’s my nifty styling guide with all the top tips.

Finding a jacket that can withstand the UK’s unpredictable weather conditions is essential. Whether it’s rain, drizzle, sleet or snow, the raincoat serves as a reliable shield against the elements. Yet, whenever I wear my raincoat, I can’t help but feel like I’m channelling a GCSE geography teacher on a field trip to the Lake District to study erosion. It’s hard to strike a balance between functional and fashionable.

Raincoats may seem at odds with style, but there’s simply no escaping their resurgence this season, and they have become something of a style signifier in its own right. Perhaps we can thank Oasis, who announced their reunion earlier this year – the Gallagher brothers are renowned for their lad-style parkas. And you only need to look towards the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks: there’s protective at Rick Owens, urban luxe at Prada and Altuzarra, and bold at Burberry.

But dressing for the rain doesn’t always mean sacrificing style. With the right approach, your waterproof jacket, coupled with print and accessory mixing, can transform a dreary day into a catwalk-ready moment. Wearing a raincoat isn’t just about staying dry; it’s an opportunity to showcase your own personal style.

Below, I’ve curated a wardrobe of statement jackets and colourful rainwear that stands out for all the right reasons. Embrace the weather and make an unforgettable statement, whether it’s with vibrant colours or high-impact prints.

When to go bold and when to stay subtle

Deciding between bold or subtle prints can depend on context and your personal style. Consider the setting: a professional environment calls for prints that are more understated, whereas a casual outing is a chance to showcase your most creative side.

Remember, the colour palette is important as it will help you tie different prints together so they appear intentional and harmonious. At the spring/summer 2024 catwalks, Prada paired sequin-sparkle dresses under yellow waterproof jackets. Call it technical partywear. Pretty yet protected.

If you wish to hop on the style á la Prada, look no further than Danish outerwear brand Rains, which reigns supreme in wet-weather fashion. Known for its classic feminine silhouettes and signature matte finishes, it’s easy to see why the brand has gained such a devoted following. We love its long jacket in khaki. Not just stylish, this raincoat is also packed with technical features, including a hood with a built-in cap, two roomy side pockets and a hidden waterproof zip to keep you dry on the wettest days.

It’s all in the balance

To avoid any fashion faux pas, follow the rule of balance: pair larger prints with smaller ones and ensure one print dominates while the other accents.

Look towards Blumarine’s autumn/winter 2024 show for inspiration, where models wore ditsy print cagoules. A style typically reserved for explorers was given a renewed twist with the dainty floral pattern.

I love this luxe leopard option below from Topshop at Asos. I have been styling it with long-line silk skirts, champagne-coloured cashmere jumpers and patent gold ballet pumps. My top tip is always to consider what you’re pairing your rainwear with; if your outfit is already elaborate, a more subtle raincoat may be the way to go.

Mix and match colour

An understanding of colour coordination and the ability to balance fashion with function are essential as you navigate the seasonal nuances of dressing for damp weather. By co-ordinating tonal colours and using neutral tones as a base layer, you can add pops of colour without overpowering your ensemble.

Fashion-forward layering

From fuzzy mohair to faux feather styles, scarves are great accessories to layer over your jacket. The texture will instantly upgrade your outfit and make it seem a far cry from the urbanite explorer look. At the Burberry spring/summer 2024 collection, models wore flamboyant feather stoles and capped hooded parkas, adding an unexpected twist to the classic lad-style jacket.

Fashion-forward layering allows you to play with textures and colours, making your rain jacket part of a thoughtfully curated look. To prevent overheating, wear breathable layers rather than hefty knits and wools.

Most importantly, pick a raincoat you feel comfortable in, and remember, a good raincoat doesn’t have to look like you can shrink it away into a coin purse.
