Oversized shirts are a summer essential: 9 styles (that aren’t white) to rely on this season

As essential as underwear (in our opinion), everyone, and we mean everyone, should own an oversized shirt. These are the best ones to shop right now, along with some tips and tricks to style them for summer.

There’s no doubt about it, an oversized shirt is one of the most versatile items you’ll wear on heavy rotation all year round. There’s something about the timeless classic that puts a shirt high up on the leaderboard when it comes to choosing an outfit on those ‘I have nothing to wear days’.

While a white or striped shirt may be hanging in your wardrobe already, there are many alternatives out there. A short-sleeved, printed party shirt that’s your first port of call when it comes to a beach cover-up on holiday? A linen version with matching separates to transform into an easy-to-style co-ord. Or instead of white, why not go for a neutral shade or even a bright block colour?

Parisian-based stylist and model Sylvie Mus shows how a black shirt with oversized cuffs can create an office-ready look when paired with tailored Bermuda shorts and heels. Alternatively, size up once or twice to get a slouchier fit and wear tucked into a pair of jeans or wide-leg trousers.

With co-ords being key for summer, you may also want to look for styles (we’ve found lots below) that have matchy-matchy pieces to shop. For work, weekends or a city break stroll, a cool set will work hard in your wardrobe all season. You could also wear the shirt over a dress for dinner and the shorts on their own with a bikini when you hit the poolside bar.

No matter how you choose to style an oversized shirt, you’ll end up wearing it across all seasons for years to come. And with the weather lately, they’re the perfect alternative to a bulky jacket.

These are the nine oversized shirts we have firmly on our wishlists this summer.
