In the name of fashion, we’re ignoring the fact that these shoulder-baring jumpers aren’t entirely practical.
We could wax lyrical about knitwear for hours because, in all honestly, it’s the only thing getting us through the depths of winter. Without cosy cashmere jumpers, the humble cardigan and easy layering pieces like the knit vest, our outfits wouldn’t be half as warm, or stylish. And what we love most about knitwear is that just when we think we’ve got all the classics covered, a new mini-trend shows up to prove us wrong. It was only the other week we were telling you about the resurgence of V-neck jumpers, and now we’re here to show you another style that’s been popping up all over Instagram: off-the-shoulder jumpers.
A favourite worn by the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan back in 2005 – most likely with low-rise jeans – they’re now being spotted on some of the most stylish women on Instagram. And you’ll be pleased to know that they’re not worn with hipster jeans this time round. If you want the intel on how to style them for 2024, keep scrolling to get some inspiration. While we can’t promise it’s the warmest knit of choice, and they do require a strapless bra, they’re guaranteed to add some fun to your knitwear collection.
Add a cosy scarf
While the look is all about showing off those shoulders, that doesn’t mean you can’t make it cold-weather-ready with some accessories. Emmanuelle adds a French-girl vibe by wearing a scarf with her off-the-shoulder knit, et voilà, the knit is instantly more wintry. We love the monochrome colour palette, too.
Go preppy by layering over a white shirt
The preppy trend is huge news this season, with button-up cardigans, knee-high socks, white shirts and boxy blazers being key. Lara ticks off all of these in one fell swoop with the addition of an off-the-shoulder knit over her shirt. It’s all about clever layering this winter, and this trick also makes the knit more suitable for the office.
Try out a jumper dress
Another item making a comeback this season is the knit dress. Combine two trends in one by wearing an off-the-shoulder style, like Nnenna, and give it a cool Scandi look by wearing matching-coloured tights. You could also try belting at the waist and layering over jeans.
Opt for a chunky style
While a heavyweight chunky style is going to be warmer in general, it’ll also allow you to add layers underneath and even wear it slightly more on the shoulders so you could potentially still wear a normal bra with straps. Ellie shows how a grey version worn with baggy jeans, strappy heels and minimalist accessories looks effortless for winter.
Reformation Oberton sweater
In cream, black or dusty pink, this super soft knit from Reformation is bound to be your new favourite winter going out top.
Weekday Lolo off-shoulder sweater
For a style you can wear as part of your everyday wardrobe, Weekday has created this classic jumper in a variety of classic shades.
Sézane Aurora jumper
Made from a mix of wool and mohair, this style from French label Sézane will still keep you cosy even though your shoulder will be on show.
