Take inspiration from our unofficial man of the year, actor Adam Brody, who graces our December cover in the ultimate woolly jumper. These cosy, personality-packed knits would make a perfect gift.
While winter feels like a whirlwind of practical dressing and striking a balance between office attire and our going-out wardrobes, the festive period is much more exciting. We often have an extended break from work, more time to think about what to wear and our wardrobes don’t need to work nearly as hard every day.
Cosy knits are the hallmark of Christmas, and Adam Brody wears some of this winter’s best woolly jumpers in Stylist’s December issue, out this week. Hannah Jefferies, head of buying at Browns, says: “This season, we’re curating the perfect mix of quiet luxury and playful novelty knitwear that transitions seamlessly from the holidays and beyond. Think Thom Browne’s festive knits, Gucci’s timeless stripes, Jacquemus’s bold pops of colour and effortlessly refined staples from Auralee and Our Legacy – understated style with just the right amount of seasonal flair.”

Emerson Stevenson-Lake, head of lifestyle brand partnerships at Frasers, believes there are two main categories of Christmas jumper wearer: “There are those who embrace bold, eye-catching designs and those who prefer a more understated look. For a truly festive vibe, Gucci’s monogram knit cardigans are perfect this season, available in bolder colours like emerald green or black and gold. If a full-colour moment isn’t your thing, you can’t beat Ami Paris’s classic range of Ami de Coeur sweatshirts and cardigans. Soft, with just the right touch of red to qualify as a Christmas jumper. And of course, comfort is always key.”
Of course these jumpers aren’t exclusively for Christmas. Mason Moore, senior buyer at Goodhood, says: “We believe in quality knitwear that can be worn throughout the year, not just for Christmas. We love the big hairy mohair cardigans from the likes of Needles and Braindead, and the softest, Japanese-made wool jumpers from Beams+. These pieces will stand the test of time and you’ll still feel festive wearing them.”
