Today’s bootcut jeans are all about fresh styling that makes them feel contemporary rather than like something plucked from a time capsule. Here’s how to wear them.

You know that moment when you look back on a fashion choice from your past and wonder, What was I thinking?

For me, it was bootcut jeans. In 2010, I swore I’d never wear them again. But with the 90s and Y2K denim revival taking over, I’ve had a style awakening. Now, I can’t help but wish I’d held onto my Miss Sixty pair.

And it’s not just me. Sydney Sweeney, Bella Hadid, Meghan Markle and Hailey Bieber have all been spotted sporting the flared silhouette, proving that bootcut jeans are officially back in rotation. The spring/summer 2025 catwalks have noted the trend too.

Casablanca went full Y2K with light-wash jeans adorned with rhinestones and studs, tie-dye T-shirts and white trainers. Sportmax also paid homage to the 2000s with low-waisted bootcut jeans that pooled at the feet, paired with matching low-slung belts. Etro showcased boho-inspired denim takes worn under knitted dresses with beaded blue-hued bags.

So how do you style them in a way that feels chic and fresh for 2025? Ahead, read Stylist’s favourite ways to wear bootcut jeans.

Go casual with a T-shirt

Bootcut jeans are best worn with a well-fitted T-shirt, whether that’s a classic crew neck, boat neck or V-neck style. When styling your jeans, let them take centre stage by keeping your top simple and fuss-free.

For a finishing touch that nails the ‘I didn’t have time’ off-duty look, throw on a pair of black mules and sleek sunglasses, like Bella Hadid – effortless yet still put together.

Mix and match your denim

There’s really no better time than the present to show your denim some love – specifically by doubling up. We hear you: double denim might bring back flashbacks of that iconic Britney and Justin moment, but it’s more wearable for day-to-day than you might think. In fact, it’s been all over the catwalks lately – just look to Casablanca and Gabriela Hearst for matchy-matchy inspiration.

Start by finding your perfect pair of bootcut jeans, then layer up the denim as much as your heart desires. A slouchy, relaxed denim shirt (we love this Cos one) or even a denim trench is perfect with spring on the way.

Consider a sportier look

Adding texture to your denim is the perfect way to make your outfit stand out and feel modern. Key pieces to note include scarves, bags and, of course, coats – these are all easy ways to bring in extra depth without overthinking it.

Leather jackets and faux fur longline coats are great layering pieces, offering texture and a bit of edge. Consider tying a thick scarf around your neck, like Akon Changkou above. It will keep the look feeling fresh while adding some much-needed warmth.
