From cool and contemporary crewnecks to prim and proper button-downs, get your knit on with these librarian chic cardi styles.
When Miu Miu sent a slew of nerdy-looking models down the autumn/winter 2023 catwalk donning chic crewneck cardigans with spotted mesh midis, we all stopped what we were doing and did a double take. Wait… are cardigans cool again?
Long favoured by librarians, it’s clear that the cardi is making a triumphant return this season. Over at Prada, the dark academia aesthetic was played into with prim and proper ribbed styles, while Loewe gave us a refresh of the classic style, with exaggerated features and a super slouchy knitted silhouette.
Molly Goddard, Khaite and APC offered further proof that the cardigan deserves a place in your autumn wardrobe, and the likes of Hailey Bieber and Kaia Gerber could be seen wearing similar styles for off-duty looks. Just last week, Emma Corrin also donned Miu Miu’s cardigan in a delightful fern shade with little knitted boy shorts and tortoiseshell-tinted shades.
Besides being versatile and exceptionally chic, the fine-knit cardigan is also a transitional weather staple – thin enough to cram into your bag while warm and cosy enough to stave off an evening chill.
With blustery weather on the horizon, layering up is key. Sling on a crewneck cardigan with a crisp white T-shirt and boyfriend jeans or mini dress for a timeless look or button up and wear under a coat, trench or puffer when temperatures drop.
From sumptuously soft merino wool to ribbed and contemporary, here are nine of the best cardigan styles to shop this season.
M&S crewneck button front cardigan
When it comes to high-quality basics, you can always count on M&S. From rose pink to bright orange and lime, this classic crewneck cardigan is available in 12 fabulous colours and sizes 6-24. The best part? It’s only £19.50.
Uniqlo crewneck cardigan
Made from 100% extra fine merino wool, this cardigan from Uniqlo is the perfect forever piece in your wardrobe.

Boden Catriona cotton cardigan
Straight in shape with a regular fit and several easy-to-wear shades to pick from, you’ll wear this crewneck cotton cardigan from Boden season after season.
Sezane Gaspard cardigan
For a more luxe take on the classic cardigan, look towards Sézane. With mother-of-pearl effect buttons, the Gaspard is a signature style that can be worn with a back opening or as a nice closed knit. The camel shade is our favourite but there are plenty more varieties to inject some colour into your wardrobe.
Mango cardigan
With cooler weather soon approaching, this cardi from Mango is just the ticket. It’s an extra thick knit with long-length sleeves and exposed seams detailing – perfect for bundling up this season.
John Lewis crewneck cotton cardigan
We love this dark green crewneck from John Lewis, especially when worn with a tweed mini with school-girl style socks and patent Mary Janes.
Benetton crewneck cardigan
Thanks to the 100% cotton, this crewneck cardigan from Benetton is insanely soft and comfy. Wear over a smock dress or with a basic white T-shirt for ultimate autumn cosiness.
White Stuff Lulu crewneck cardigan
Lovely and smooth, this pretty cardigan from White Stuff will elevate your wardrobe with a light layer of warmth.
Zara ribbed knit cardigan
Want the Miu Miu look without breaking the bank? This little knitted number from Zara will achieve all your dark academia dreams. Just button up and put your specs on.
