Mulberry, Chloé and Gucci agree, sending big, exaggerated shades down their most recent runways.

Although the sun isn’t quite shining as much as we’d expect for mid-July, the pull of chic sunglasses has us in their clutches. Much like clothing, new styles of sunglasses stand out each season and we start to see the same handful on rotation.

Some key shapes we love are the aviator-style that became particularly popular in the 70s and 80s, cemented by Tom Cruise’s appearance in Top Gun, shortly followed by the teeny-tiny specs that shot to fame in the 90s and reappeared a couple of seasons ago, and before that the chic round styles that reigned supreme in the 30s.

Although, one shape seems to stand out more than most thanks to its exaggerated proportions – Victoria Beckham and Anna Wintour have both incorporated XXL shades into their iconic style, and these oversized sunglasses are firmly back in fashion for summer 2024.

Spotted on the most recent runways from Chloé, Gucci, and Mulberry, exaggerated frames are firmly at the forefront of this year’s accessories trend. Think extra large acetate frames and thick rims in a range of colours and patterns with the-bigger-the-better as the sole focus. Although, as the accessory is so eye-catching (pun fully intended), styling them needs a little more attention.

As the rims are so huge, paying close attention to colour will work in your favour. While darker frames are often easier to come by and do pair perfectly with black, if you usually wear lighter, brighter colours especially during the warm weather months, a softer shade could be a great solution. Think cream, brown, or tortoiseshell.

Secondly, take shape into consideration. Square or rectangular shades add a more modern touch and can make quite the style statement, especially when paired with equally standout earrings, a sharp collar or bandeau top. We’d suggest keeping the top half of your outfit rather simplistic so as to not overpower the sunnies and balance it out with a wide-leg jean or A-line skirt. Oval and circular shapes can offer a slightly softer style. However, if equally large in proportion, we’d treat them in a very similar way to angular. Scroll down to see our six favourites.
