These are the outfits we’re taking inspiration from for our own occasionwear wardrobes.

This week, hordes of film industry experts, make-up artists, models, celebrities and actors descended on the French seaside town of Cannes for the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals. As one of the industry’s biggest celebrations of cinema, it unsurprisingly garners a lot of attention, showing both blockbusters and indie flicks competing for the Palme d’Or (the award given to the best film).

This year, highlights include the highly anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Anna Taylor-JoyMegalopolis, starring Adam Driver; and Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga, featuring Sienna Miller and others.

While the main focus is, of course, on the cinema, many of the guests inevitably like to have fun with fashion, stepping onto the red carpet in gorgeous gowns and standout accessories. Model Rawdah Mohamed made a case for modest fashion in a sculptural blue dress, French singer and songwriter Yseult leaned into a monochrome look with a black skirt and white blazer – and an extra large hat to accessorise – and Bella Hadid opted for a Saint Laurent look that increased searches for the brand by 26%.

Here at Stylist, we’ve collated our favourite red carpet looks from the week so far, so consider this your inspiration for occasionwear dressing.

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep has graced our screens for a number of years now and few people could have played Miranda Priestly to the same level of perfection. Stepping onto the Cannes red carpet in a flowing cream dress, complete with sunglasses, a classic clutch and drop earrings, she exuded effortless elegance in a way we will try our hardest to recreate.

A vision in baby blue, model and social media star Rawdah Mohamed wore a highly sculptural wave-like gown to grace the red carpet. Custom made by couture house Cheney Chan and accessorised with blue-toned glasses from Neubau Eyewear and Boucheron jewels, the full look was immediately eye-catching.

Yseult

French singer-songwriter Yseult made a case for monochrome. Opting for a chic black pleated maxi skirt with a contrasting white blazer, the custom Dior look was simple yet striking. Plus, the accessories added extra interest, with black gloves and a straw hat taking centre stage.

Greta Gerwig

Holding the prestigious title of president of the Cannes Film Festival jury, Greta Gerwig looked striking in a striped sundress. Pulled straight from the runway of John Galliano’s spring 2024 couture collection for Maison Margiela, the outfit has become one of the most talked about among fashion fans for good reason.

Naomi Campbell

A mainstay on many a red carpet, Naomi Campbell, styled by Law Roach, opted for a chic all-black Chanel look for Cannes. Stepping into this season’s sheer styling trend, the striped sequin and see-through skirt was quite a standout.

Sienna Miller

Bringing more of a laidback look to the French Riviera, Sienna Miller stepped into her synonymous cool girl style. Styled by Harry Lambert, the Horizon: An American Saga star pulled on a pair of Schiaparelli barrel jeans and a cream bouclé jacket, creating a look we’re certainly going to try and recreate.

Peggy Gou

Also playing with monochromatic styling, DJ Peggy Gou donned a David Koma gown. Adding interest with two long white strands and a sheer side slit, the simplistic style played on two key trends for this season: sheer and big coquette bows.

Mitchell Akat Maruko Raan

While model Mitchell Akat Maruko Raan’s gown may immediately look like Versace, thanks to the large gold Medusa head, it’s designed by Harvey Cenit and is one of the most striking styles we’ve seen so far.

Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow has played upon quite a few top trends with this Tamara Ralph look, and we love the flamboyance of it. The all-white suit plays with pearls, capri pants and a cowboy-like hat that only adds extra drama.

Bella Hadid

Pulled straight from the autumn/winter catwalks, Bella Hadid caused quite the stir in this Saint Laurent sheer look. Prompting a 26% increase in brand searches and 55% more on that specific outfit on fashion search engine Tagwalk, it shows the power the Cannes red carpet can have on fashion houses.

Kelly Rowland

Ivory satin gowns may scream bridal, but Kelly Rowland managed to make this style sway far away from that. Complete with voluminous shoulder and side detailing to add extra interest, the singer accessorised with silver jewellery.
