The beach-ready style can be made more modest for office environments as well.
The sun is finally shining so it’s time to go full-steam ahead with summer plans – holidays, festivals and weekend barbecues all included. To welcome in the warm weather, it may be tempting to add a new item or two to your seasonal wardrobe, shrugging off the heavyweight layers for lighter denim jackets, shorts, dresses and our favourite summertime fabric: crochet.
Available in a whole host of options from dresses to trousers, crochet is the beach-ready fabric that will instantly make you feel like you’re heading on holiday. With gaping holes and intricate patterns on some pieces and tight-knit, chunkier weaves on others, the style is only growing in popularity. Bonus points if you find something that looks like your grandma made it; after all, it’s real authenticity we’re after.
While knicker-bearing trousers might look a touch out of place on most morning commutes, it’s a certain piece of crochet we’re focusing on for now: shirts. And, luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from – cardigans, collared polos and vests all included.
Farm Rio crochet fruit sweater
For a warmer option, this crochet sweater is a standout star. In a cute-meets-kitsch design, tiny crocheted fruits hang from the oversized knit, giving it an incredibly unique design.
Yours curve green boxy crochet top
Simple yet chic, this dark green crochet top will become your go-to T-shirt as soon as the weather warms up. A little more breathable than your classic cotton thanks to the crochet weave, it’s a small style tweak that will add a touch more interest to any outfit.
H&M crochet-look vest top
For a real summertime feel, this H&M style will tick all of your beach holiday boxes while working just as well with white jeans. The circular pattern adds a pretty detail while looking (very expertly) homemade.
Mango short-sleeve crochet polo shirt
If it’s colour you’re after, this Mango shirt is wonderful. In a polo shirt style, it’s sharp and sleek while offering a more fun style than a regular white collar.
Next long sleeve crochet cardigan
This Next crochet cardigan certainly brings the boho vibes. Combining floral shapes with a wide-knit fabric, it’s an eye-catching layer that works perfectly with wide-leg jeans for a 70s feel.
Simply Be mono crochet look jumper
Typically, crochet leans into the floral, doily-like look and this Simply Be pick does just that. Contrasting black and white shades, it’s a more modern take on an old-school classic that works with a whole host of looks.
Tu neutral geometric pointelle tunic top
If you’re concerned about how much wear you’ll get from a crochet top, this Tu option could be a great introduction to the style. In a neutral shade with a pretty pointelle pattern, it’s more understated than the classic crochet top and will pair effortlessly with trousers, jeans or skirts.
River Island yellow crochet stripe polo top
This polo top is proving plenty popular with some sizes already selling out. In a tight-knit weave, it’s perfect for more modest occasions, while the yellow, navy and cream crochet makes it a staple summer-ready style.
Free People Lily crochet top
Perfect for the warmer weather, this lilac button-front top is just delightful. Whether shrugged on over a bikini or a vest to make it a little more modest, it’ll add a soft boost of colour to any look.
