A cotton shirt is a must-have for spring. Take your cues from the catwalk and wear yours with mini-dresses, sportswear or tailoring.
Is there anything better than buttoning up a crisp, freshly ironed shirt? Arguably the most versatile item in your wardrobe, the humble cotton shirt works with just about everything.
For a smart but not too ‘done’ look, go for a white or pale blue oversized cotton shirt with a loose-fitting suit and trainers or backless clogs. A cotton shirt in chocolate brown looks effortless but smart with mid-wash denim, while a crisp, oversized style looks great with this season’s retro luxe sportswear trend – simply add slim joggers and retro trainers.
When summer arrives, roll your shirt sleeves up to the elbow and wear unbuttoned with a ribbed vest and wide-leg jeans or cotton trousers. (The Frankie Shop and Hush’s bold bright shirts are great for holidays and hot weather.) Another failsafe summer look is a coloured cotton shirt (go up two sizes) with parachute trousers and sandals.

The enduring appeal of the cotton shirt is evident on the catwalks. This season’s collections were filled with various iterations, from smart tailored shirts with exquisite knee-length skirts at 16Arlington to structured shirts worn as jackets over mini dresses with flat point-toe pumps at Valentino. At Proenza Schouler, meanwhile, neat, buttoned-up shirts in black and white were worn with tailored trousers, belt bags and loafers.
There are brilliant shirts available on the high street, too – Marks & Spencer’s failsafe oversized white shirt is a wardrobe essential. And Reformation’s Will shirt, which comes in over seven shades from blue and black to a light lemon, will work with so much of your existing wardrobe.
