Foam soles, ankle straps and sweat-soaking fabrics all included.
Sandal season is upon us, freeing our feet from the confines of boots and trainers. But while they may stamp out sweat and allow the breeze to touch our toes, they aren’t always the most comfortable or sturdy of shoes.
Running for the bus in flip-flops will often end in disaster; gladiator sandals, although stylish, may leave your feet looking lacerated with lines after swelling up in the heat; and then there’s the issue of arch support – a thin leather sole certainly can’t match the comfort of your favourite runner, after all.

Striped trousers are summer’s must-have style: 9 pairs to shop now
So allow us to introduce you to comfortable sandals, the hybrid between a sandal and a cushioned-soled shoe that’s sure to see you through summer without blisters and back pain. And luckily, there’s a whole host of options to choose from that look much more runway than something your podiatrist might have recommended.
In fact, you can take your pick between the chunky flip-flops that were a firm fashion favourite last year, ankle strap styles that put a stop to any slippage, and foam soles that add a spring to your step. The choice is yours, but to get you off to a good start, we’ve listed a few of our favourite finds below.
Teva original universal sandals
Teva sandals are becoming increasingly popular with velcro straps and a foam sole that’s comfy enough to hike in. This pink and purple shade is one of our favourite finds, breaking away from the basic black options.
Birkenstock Arizona suede sandals
Few sandals are as famous as Birkenstocks, and the two-strap Arizona is one of the most beloved designs. With a cork sole and suede straps, they wick away sweat while cushioning the foot from all sides.

FitFlop F-mode leather flatform toe-post sandals
The Row’s flatform flip-flop was a true fashion favourite last year, but they retail at close to £1,000. Luckily, comfort-focused shoe brand FitFlop has brought out its own chunky-soled sandal that we’re just as big a fan of.

Dune Lockstockk double-strap turn-lock flat sandals
You may have spotted similar sandals from the likes of Chanel, and this silver (much lower-priced) pick has really caught our eye.

Jigsaw Raquel platform sandal
These cream flatform sandals are sure to see you through many an occasion. Pair with denim shorts and a simple T-shirt for a laidback look or wide-leg trousers and a shirt for work – wherever you go, these are sure to work wonders.
Schuh Tanya chunky flatform sandals in black
If you’re more of a chunky boot fan, these sandals are an easy summer swap. They’re also suitable for vegans, so everyone can enjoy them.
M&S flatform square-toe mules
Barbiecore fashion is certainly picking up pace, and these pink sandals slot into the theme just perfectly.
Forever Comfort leather double-strap footbed sandals
The clue is in the name with this brand, so it’s no surprise that this pair is built for comfort. The upper is leather and this animal print makes it playful enough to be worn for a whole host of occasions.

Crocs skyline sandal
This may not look like the Crocs clog we’re all familiar with, but the brand’s new summer collection has some really fun new styles, including this strappy sandal. Made with a soft TPU upper and extra-large sole, it’s certainly comfy.
