Who knew this earthy shade could look so chic?
As much as we’ll always love wearing black, it can, on occasion, make an outfit look a little flat and one-dimensional. So why not introduce a touch of brown to your wardrobe? This earthy shade is understated and has the power to give any outfit, no matter how casual, an immediate dose of elegance.
It should come as no surprise – given fashion’s penchant for quiet luxury and minimalist dressing – that this neutral shade has become the latest colour trend.
At the Milan shows this past weekend, designer labels including Tom Ford, Boss and Fendi all introduced a dash of brown to their spring/summer 2024 collections. Elsewhere, models and influencers were in on the trend, with Olivia Neill donning a chic head-to-toe brown skirt and top for the Tod’s show this weekend.
When it comes to picking the shades, there are plenty of options to try. Choose from luxurious carob and deep chocolate to light mocha. Unlike other dark neutrals, brown is a warm tone, which makes it incredibly easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Opt for entire looks in subtle shades – like coffee and taupe – or add one piece to your outfit to ease yourself into the colour. To make a statement, mix contrasting shades and sport an all-brown look – effortless and high-impact.
From luxe leather crossbody bags and classic slip skirts to retro-style trainers, these are nine of the best brown pieces to add to your wardrobe for the season ahead.
H&M rib-knit cardigan
When the air gets nippy, opt for a cosy knit cardigan. This one from H&M has a V-neck and loose-fit design – the best style to bundle up in this season.
Cos swing crossbody bag
Have you ever seen a more delectable bag on the high street than this Cos crossbody? In supple buttery smooth-grain leather, this season’s offering is in a deeply luxurious dark-brown shade that’s easily matched with any neutral wardrobe.
M&S satin midaxi slip skirt
Slip on this fabulously rich maxi skirt from M&S to see off the autumn weather in style. With a regular fit and elasticated waistband – it’s easy to wear and looks exceptional with boots or a ballet flat.
& Other Stories oversized quilted puffer jacket
If you’re anything like us, you’ll be thinking ahead to the colder months. Get your wardrobe winter-ready with this coat of dreams from & Other Stories. Wearing it feels like you’ve not yet left your duvet and it comes in the most exquisite chocolate shade – what’s not to love?
John Lewis wide-leg trousers
You can never go wrong with a brown trouser, especially for the office. They always look incredibly chic and these ones from John Lewis are wide-leg for extra sophistication.
Aligne Gilda maxi trench coat
Aligne has given the trench a little shake-up this autumn, reinventing the classic style in a beautiful mustang shade. Whether tied at the waist or left unbuttoned, this double-breasted style will always look elegant.
Pull & Bear double faced long jacket
Wrap up warm in this faux-fur jacket from Pull & Bear; it’s divine. Pair with denim mom jeans, a fine knit sweater and suede trainers for a truly cool take.
Rouje Palymyra shirt
Textured to the touch, this crinkle shirt from Rouje is a delicious chocolate shade and the perfect little transitional piece to get you through cold-weather season. We recommend sizing up as it does run small, then layer on your favourite cashmere jumper for ultimate comfort.
Adidas x Wales Bonner trainers
Pay homage to the 1970s with these retro brown suede trainers by Adidas in collaboration with Wales Grace Bonner. We love the slick streamlined design, contrasting cream stitching and orange leather details for a zesty touch.
