Less punchy than lemon and softer than gold, this buttery shade will bring a sense of freshness to your wardrobe – just in time for spring.
Pastels are making a return for spring, but none feel more on-trend right now than butter yellow. Always a subtle shade – soft but never saccharine, warm yet never dull – butter yellow is stepping into the spotlight this spring. From silky slip skirts to sharp suiting, the warm hue is proving it can be just as chic as it is comforting.
This delicate version of yellow took to the catwalks for spring/summer 2025. At Tod’s, waxy jackets and boxy tops were styled with glossy oxblood loafers, while Jil Sander showed sleek separates and ombré dresses. Meanwhile, Jacquemus paired pale yellow Breton-striped trousers with matching dresses.

Lisa Illis, head of womenswear design at M&S, tells Stylist: “Butter yellow has emerged as a prominent colour for spring 2025. Seen across the catwalks, the shade has solidified its status as a must have for the season and the transitional spring colour is fast becoming a favourite ‘neutral’ with customers.”
If you want to easily incorporate this warm, inviting shade into your wardrobe, just mix in complementary tones. Pair butter yellow with soft beige, creamy cappuccino shades or earthy khaki greens for a balanced look. Crisp whites and dark denim offer a clean contrast, making the yellow pop without overwhelming your outfit.
Right now, there are so many fabulous options to choose from, including & Other Stories’s pretty ballet flats in suede and Reformation’s silky slip skirt – both of which look stunning and are practically made for wedding guest season. There’s also the viral M&S three-piece butter-yellow suit, which is the perfect hi-low co-ord to see you into spring.

& Other Stories suede ballet flats
Wear these & Other Stories Mary Jane flats without socks and pair with dark denim for an effortless look. Crafted from supple leather, they have lots of metal hardware to toughen up the light hue.
M&S tailored collarless blazer
Of course, the famous M&S tailored suit had to be included in our butter-yellow edit, it’s so chic and versatile. “Wear head to toe and style with tonal accessories as a colour drench statement or as separates to more subtly embrace the trend,” says Illis.
Albaray butter-yellow button-through cable tank
A key transitional piece, this Albaray vest is the perfect layering staple. In spring, wear it over a poplin blouse with a chic necktie. Come summer, leave it unbuttoned over a cotton sundress for an easy, breezy evening look.
John Lewis Anyday North/South faux leather hobo bag
Hobo bags are having a little refresh this spring, and this leather one from John Lewis is a particularly sweet and cheerful option.

Abercrombie & Fitch collarless suiting blazer
We can’t wait to wear this Abercrombie & Fitch blazer for all our Teams calls and 9am meetings. It pairs beautifully with dark barrel-leg jeans, ballet flats and heavy gold earrings to pick up its sunny hue.
Sézane Max shirt
This shirt has a butter-yellow Breton stripe pattern that feels straight off the Jacquemus catwalk. Taking inspiration from the shows, we’d wear with a matching yellow or white belt for a more defined silhouette.
Reformation Bella silk skirt
Channel 90s nostalgia in this silky slip skirt from Reformation. If you love it as much as we do, it’s also available in two other patterned styles. Made from 100% silk with a relaxed fit, we recommend sizing down for a more fitted look.
Me & Em pinstripe man pant
Me & Em’s pastel trousers have earned Stylist’s fashion team’s seal of approval for being so comfy and chic. With pinstripe details, they’re smart enough for your 9 to 5, but we can easily see them working for a birthday dinner or wedding guest look. Just swap your loafers out for sleek heels.
