Basket bags are a summer essential: 9 styles (that aren’t Loewe) to wear with all your new season looks

Even fashion editors would struggle to guess these basket bags are from the high street – shop the under-£100 styles that’ll gain as much attention as their designer counterparts.
As soon as there’s a glimmer of sunshine, you can place your bets on how many Loewe basket bags you’ll spot in the wild. First launched in 2017, there was a stampede to pick up the then-£295 logo-adorned bag that sent fashion insiders into a frenzy. Now, the same medium-sized basket bag with tan leather detailing will set you back £450, and the brand has just launched its Paseo straw bag for £2,250. Sure, we (along with everyone else) are still obsessed with the go-with-everything timeless designs, and the new iterations are still as highly anticipated as ever, but you don’t have to splurge on designer brands to get a great-quality straw bag.
The high street has come through with some of the best basket bags Stylist’s fashion team has seen in a while. And they’re all coming in at under £100. Mango has a sleek rounded-handle bag that comes in two sizes (depending if you’re a big or small bag person); Arket has a tasselled version that’ll give French designer Jacquemus a run for its money; and Next’s woven style is bringing the Bottega Veneta vibes. Considering a straw bag will go with any summer outfit – from a floaty cotton midi dress to a linen set – you’re bound to wear any of these on heavy rotation all season.

Mango natural fibre basket bag
Excuse us for a moment while we try and get over the fact this sub-£50 woven beauty exists. It also comes with a crossbody strap so it’s basically a two-for-one buy. Prefer XL basket bags? There’s a bigger version for £79.99.
Arket fringe straw tote
It’s got Jacquemus designer vibes but can be found on the high street. Upgrade your work tote with this fringed version (it’s big enough to fit a laptop in) and wait for all the compliments to come in from your colleagues.
& Other Stories large straw tote
The tote-style shape combined with the contrast white detailing makes this basket bag (another style to come with a detachable strap) look so premium. Use it as a handheld by the pool or as a crossbody while exploring on holiday.
Whistles Mira straw tote
A chic alternative to classic straw tones, this black iteration is another style that’s guaranteed to go with absolutely any look. We’re imagining it with a vest top, shirt and jorts with fisherman sandals.
Zara Home oval beach tote bag
The fashion team swears by Zara Man when it comes to finding the best summer shirts, and for bags, Zara Home is the hidden destination. Just take a look at this sleek brown basket if you need further proof.
M&S straw striped tote bag
With so many designer opting for bright, bold and fun beach bags, you don’t have to stick to classic hues for your basket to look expensive. As one of the key colours this season, this green striped tote gets our vote.
Next raffia weave shopper
One word: wow! How incredible is this woven bag? Whether you take it to brunch, poolside on holiday or just embrace it as your new everyday bag, you’ll wear it all season. Raffia bags don’t have to be just reserved for summer.
New Look stone stripe basket bag
Well done, New Look. This striped basket bag is basically a holiday hero – wear it with a shorts and shirt co-ord at the beach, a linen skirt and vest top for city exploring or even with a dress and heels for evening.
French Connection raffia basket bag
There’s no doubt about it – everyone will think you’ll found this wooden-handled style at a boutique in an exotic location. The perfect summer bag does exist.
